The metallic taste you’re getting is more likely caused by actual metals being present in the water (I.e. iron, zinc, etc.). The grains setting is for hardness, or dissolved solids; so, upping the grains level will probably not make any difference. It will only cause your softener to regenerate more often. You may want to have the water tested - a simple test for hardness and iron content can be done by a company like (or any similar) Culligan. Take both a non-softened and softened sample. For a more thorough test, get a sample kit from your local health department.

what is the white knob in back of the timer on this water softer??????
