One of my most favorite Barbra Streisand movies!!!
This is, without any doubt, one of Barbra Streisand's best movies ever in her career as a singer and actress. She does an excellent job with her role in this movie. Kris Kristofferson is great as well. I'm not very familiar with any of his work before or after this movie, but he did fine. The songs in the movie are especially remarkable. The most well known song in this movie has got to be Evergreen, which is one of my most favorite Barbra Streisand songs ever. I also have the soundtrack album of this movie, and it is fun to listen to. I'm so pleased that this movie has finally been released on DVD so that fans who first saw it in the cinema back in 1976 will be able to enjoy it in digital form more than 30 years later. The chemistry between Barbra and Kris is great; they did a great job together. My mother first saw this movie when it was in the cinema back in '76 and she too had the album on LP (which she doesn't have anymore due to it being broken). The video and audio transfer was really crisp, clear and fresh sounding. The additional features were great as well; those being the deleted scenes, wardrobe tests (the outfit Barbra had on that looked like a tuxedo was kind of crazy looking), and the trailer gallery for all three versions of A Star is Born (I didn't really pay too much attention to the first two trailers, so I just bolted on to the trailer for this '76 flick), and you also get commentary by Barbra herself. I watched this movie in full with her commentary, and she did an excellent job with her narration about how this movie was done, how certain scenes were shot, etc. When watching this movie with her commentary, you almost get the feeling that you and her are watching this movie together, and that she is really talking to you in person and telling you about this movie. That is totally excellent. Way to go, Barbra!!! Get this movie and add it to your movie library, and be sure to get the soundtrack album so that that can be added to your Barbra Streisand music library, as well! My grade for the movie: A Additional scenes: A Barbra's commentary: A 5.1 Dolby Digital sound: A

A Star Is Re-Born
Before A Star is Born was released in 1976, Barbra Streisand was considered by many people to be main stream and `old school'. With the release of the film, Barbra was able to re-invent herself as a contemporary artist and her career, like the film itself, took off and she became a bigger star than ever. The film and the accompanying soundtrack were huge hits, hitting number one at the box office and topping the billboard charts. Career-wise Barbra never looked back. She successfully starred in and executive-produced a box office smash, something unheard of in the 1970s for a woman, and it was from the strength of this film that she went on to direct and star in the critically acclaimed films Yentl and the Prince of Tides. Instead of looking at the merits of the film, some reviews here suggest the clothes and hairstyles in A Star Is Born are dated. Shouldn't they be? After all, the film was released 30 years ago! If what's important to you are contemporary costumes and hair, I would suggest you pick up a new release. If you are looking to see one of the biggest hits of the 1970s, watch A Star Is Born. Barbra won an Oscar and two Grammy awards for composing/singing the (Love theme from A Star Is Born) Evergreen. She also took home Golden Globes for acting, composing and producing.

Great Movie
Great movie. I never saw the 3rd remake, this one I can relate to star wise. Not a fan of lady gaga. Stood the test of time, I still cry when he dies. Did you know the clothes she wore in the movie were from her own closet?

The BEST modern version, still.
Excluding the version with Frederick March, this version continues to be the best modern remake including Cooper/Gaga. I have to be honest about Cooper/Gaga; I was dying to see it expecting it to out do Streisand/Kristofferson, I was shocked to be wrong. There were wonderful revelations and moments. Lady Gaga’s interaction w Cooper’s character bar/parking lot and sharing the song in the parking lot (gold). Cooper’s character funny and vulnerable...but what Streisand did 1000% right is her character never lost sight of herself, who she was as a performer, who and what her voice was and that is what Kristofersson’s character loved her and was willing to give his career, his very life up for her. Because she KNEW exactly who and what she was, selling out wasn’t even in the realm of possibility. What Cooper did so very wrong, why I couldn’t care about their love, her career, and anything that resulted from their union as a result of her career. She, so strong as to write “Shallows” immediately sells herself out to sing a la J Lo, changing herself into a pop queen faster than a popsicle melts in AZ, and has him calling her on it...in what world is that undying unconditional love. Who the heck cares if he derails her pop career, it’s cruddy, it deserves to be derailed. It didn’t make sense that he would give his life to protect that which he didn’t respect...that’s where Cooper went wrong. Streisand wrote her version perfectly. Kristofferson is gorgeous, has been a singer so he can play a singer an vulnerability oozes out if every pore. Streisand’s character so sure if everything is completely unsure of the deceitful Hollywood world that wants to change everything about her, and she stands firm so you root for her. He tells her to stand firm so you love him for it, so you love them, you root for them and even though you hate him you get it when he is unfaithful you want them to stay together. When he races off in his Fararri, and you know what’s coming you keep saying no, no...When Cooper’s character embarrasses his wife you wonder why he’s not happy cause her accolades are for music he doesn’t and she shouldn’t respect. It should be an opportunity for her to wake-up. Instead she yells at him about being critical of her? You don’t feel any thing for her, you don’t want him to stay with her, you want him to leave and go back out on the road with his brother, sober and leave her behind. Dying for her success making crappy music makes no sense and was a waste of a remake, a waste of VOD and certainly a waste of my time. Instead watch the Streisand/Kristofferson version and the March version much better!!

Loved this the first time it was released. Had to get my own copy. My favourite of all the versions of this film. The song 'With one more look at you' gets me every time. Kris Kristofferson - what a beautiful man - and Streisand is amazing - as ever.
