It'll keep spinning a little bit even if it's locked but you'll notice it gets harder to turn. You may hear a light click as well. The way to know for sure that it's locked is there is a clear part on the ring that will show orange when it's locked. That's a better indicator. Of you don't see that and it's not locking in you have a defective one.

do you have batteries for range finder

I'm not sure how this question relates to a review of the Frogger golf brush but my range finder takes one CR2 lithium battery that I buy either at a supermarket or drug store. Look to see what kind of battery your range finder takes and go from there. I am sure they are also available here at Amazon as well.

Does this come with the key chain ring to put towel on?

Yes. The pics for whatever reason don't show it, but mine came with the ring.
