Gift for my brother who plays drums for modern dance.

Not useful
I purchased this to use as background with work with trauma victims since I went to a workshop that advocated drumming music as helpful. It may be, but this version is not.

Much more than I expected
The sound quality is great! The drummers are totally involved, great stuff. There are a few cuts with Flute, a Salsa, some vocal, but for the most part this is release is weighted on the percussion side. Enjoy

This is where it all started.
The music is ok, a very good representation of the genre. Track one consists of drums and flute, Track two contains vocals and percussion, and so it goes with similar variations. A valuable CD for teachers, dance schools and background music for stores etc. But hey, don't forget... great listening as well if you are into this kind of music. Very raw stuff; the very basics of music's heartbeat are here. Osibisa, Santana, Dibango, Masekela and many jazz masters can look here for their roots. It does not get more visceral than this. The sleeve contains no credits or useful information at all, save for the track titles as is sometimes the case with re-releases of LPs (if this is the case here). This lack of information is an insult to the artists performing on this CD as well as to the listeners, especially as this album is likely to be sought-out by music connoisseurs and students looking for that primeordial rarity.A million demerits to the producers, who do not fail to mention their company name. One only hopes that when these guys die, someone will forget to include their names on their gravestones.

The artist is...
The artist for this album is Princes of Dahomey. I looked it up on [...]Good album, great percussion and crossover of instrumentation and evolutionary styles.

Dreadful recording
If you would like to learn how to destroy a fantastic performance with lousy production, then buy this. These guys thought it was a good idea to FADE some of the tracks. Instruments and vocals are so close-miked that it sounds as though they swallowed the mic. The result is a series of disconnected, incomplete, unsatisfying tracks completely robbed of any soul. The whole experience is reminiscent of walking past street musicians that you'd love to stop and hear if only you weren't in such a hurry.
