Melamine, particle board, and MDF (medium density fiberboard) are notorious for their poor holding power when it comes to most traditional fasteners. The European market found a solution for these innovative materials. Confirmat style connecting screws are designed for cabinets or other types of box construction. These unique fasteners act like a steel dowel forming a strong, stiff butt joint. They have a large shoulder under the head that locks the screw into the wood and prevents pulling through into softer materials. A tight fitting Pozi drive makes running these screws a breeze. You will notice that these thick fasteners have a blunt point. To install, simply align the two pieces and drill a pilot hole with a specially designed three step bit. A slight unthreaded portion at the tip makes it easy to line up the holes during assembly. Connecting screws can be removed and reinstalled several times without loss of holding power. 5mm x 40mm (1 1/2" nominal length) screw is for use with 1/2" thick materials. Use #2 PoziDrive bit for 5mm x 40mm. Bright zinc plated for a clean, finished look. Starter kit include: step drill bit, replacement pilot, PoziDrive bit and 100 screws.

The screws and bits are very well constructed, but I have had a few issues. I have tried to use these several times with 5/8" melamine and have trouble each time. The screws have cracked the melamine each time I have used them, even when I have tried running the bit in multiple times to make sure the hole is sufficiently clear. I have been sure to drill into both workpieces as well. The screw caps that came with my kit don't fit in this size screw head. I've moved back to using decking screws. Maybe I'm doing something wrong ...

Great product
Does exactly what it supposed to. I built a built in cupboard out of melamine and used dowel and these screws on the butt joint to hold it together. I was a little concerned that the melamine may split or lose integrity in some way, but it all held together to form a really strong box.
