Q: can this lock be mounted on a 4x4 post?

yes, i installed on 4x4 (3 1/2"). tells you where to cut the locking stem in order to work. i have had no issues.

Q: Why does my button stay depressed it doesn’t automatically come out again?

That means that its not quite lined up correctly, I had to make an adjustment on mine
