Q: Can you tell me the diameter of the center hub? I'm wondering if I can snap it together to contain romex so it will be easier to pull without kinks.

The hub is 4 1/2 inches, which is enough room the fit the average male fist. It will snap together (make sure you align the pieces correctly), and should hold romex without kinking as long as you carefully reel it on.

What do you mean by taking it down? like taking off the shelf to use? If that is the case this is NOT what you want, you would want a retractable cord real for that type of use, and don't go cheap if you will be winding and unwinding regularly. the rewind spring will break easily on the cheaper models. I hope this helps in your decision. this cord real is perfect for storing cords neatly and then taking the cord to the job site exactly as described.
