Mine were burlap. Not as rough as hessian.

Would these be suitable to put baking soda in at all or would it just come out? TIA😁

These are made of coarse hessian so are porous...they have been coated with a glue like substance (of unknown composition) to partially seal the gaps, but this might react with baking soda. The bags themselves are rather hasily made. On the whole I would not advise it be used for a food product!
