Will a 16" fan fit between normal 16" studs?

no it does NOT! fit between 16" o.c. studs the hole it needs to fit is 16¹/⁴" X 16¹/⁴"

What is overall depth?

depth from wall to back of motor is 6 inches

When my fan shuts off the shutters won’t close on there own.. I have to go outside and hand shut every time..And when hand shut,they won’t open by fan

Sorry to hear, mine works flawless; I self installed it. Does it move easily? I can manually open it (fan off) with no resistance and if I let it go the flaps fall down immediately. It’s designed and balanced to operate just by the airflow. The only thing I can think of in your case is that during the installation the mechanics got bend or obstructed , e.g by caulking. If you feel resistance opening it (fan off) and if it doesn’t easily close when you let it go, then the mechanism is impacted and it won’t work with airflow.
