It's super simple if you know about computers
Works really well! One thing you might note: There are no directions! It's super simple if you know about computers, and probably even if you don't, but for the people who feel intimidated by them, you might need somebody to help you.Recovered all the info. from my old hard drive. WooHoo!One more note: If your recovering an old hard drive, remember that the old drive is almost always named C: also, so be careful, a lot of your old paths will refer to C: and your computer will be looking for them on your current C: drive.

what works best
I ordered this item in order to access sata drives that I had acquired from crashed towers. In particular dvd drives to use as my primary optical drive. This adapter works wonders for use of the sata drives.

A bit wonky but works well
Takes a bit to set up but good for the money

DO NOT USE THE INCLUDED POWER SUPPLY!!!
USB adapter works fine, good for connecting old IDE drives to a modern system if you need to grab some old data or whatever. HOWEVER. The included power supply is EXTREMELY cheap and dangerous - the second I plugged mine in it shorted straight to ground and some of the resistors inside the PSU melted/exploded. Just in that split second it got hot enough to melt some of the plastic on the case.

An absolute life-saver!
Very simple to use.One of four partitions on my 3TB hard drive failed, and I couldn't access any information on the drive while it was hooked up internally (via the SATA bus). So I used this kit to access it via USB, and was able to save everything - including hundreds of gigabytes of pictures - except the contents of the damaged partition (all of which was easily downloaded again).

Not worth it
It worked fine when you first plug it in but then it stops working. Sent it back and got a replacement and it did the exact same thing.Waste of money

Gets the job done
Pro: it works (at least on SATA, haven't tried PATA yet).It comes in a real pretty box.Con: Cheap materials make it hard to assemble. This package looks like a bunch of adapters thrown together. It comes with: a USB to PATA/SATA adapter, a SATA cable, a power supply with a Molex connection, and a Molex-to-SATA adapter. The biggest issue I had was with the Molex-to-SATA adapter. The material used in the connectors is so cheap, it will plug in backwards! The housings are polarized, but the plastic stretches. The pins are in so loose, one literally came out the back side of the Molex connector (which made it easier to align only three pins instead of four, then insert the fourth). The first time I got it together, after about 20 minutes of trying to align those pins, the plastic stretched and it went in backwards. Luckily I checked before I blew my new drive! The cord on the power supply is pretty short, too. It really needs to be a little longer. Luckily it's a standard three-prong computer power cord.I have used similar sets in the past, and this is the only one that required the use of the power supply on SATA drives. Every other one took power from the USB port, which means an expected single cable wound up requiring all four components to use. I could overlook that (it does prevent overloading the USB power allowance) if they would use a better Molex-to-SATA power adapter and provide a little longer power cord. I have also never seen one before that required a SATA cable from the adapter. In my experience, the SATA power and data connectors on the adapter are molded together on one side and a PATA data connector is molded on the other. Not this one. The SATA data is just a SATA data connector on the front of the adapter.Still, bottom line, the set works fine once you get it assembled. I really wish I could give half-stars, as it really deserved three and a half. Not bad for the price, just check your connections carefully.

Find your data on an old Hard Drive
To find your data on an old Hard Drive just plug in the appropriate plugs and plug the USB plug into your computer. Turn on Explorer and the drive will show up and allow you to edit or transfer the data to your existing drives. I didn't plug the power (110) in until all of the other plugs were in place JIC. When plugging in all plugs examine carefully the shape - there is a proper orientation. I was totally pleased and spent several hours examining two very old drives successfully.
