Drawn to an alluring beauty he meets aboard a train, a Russian writer follows her into an elegant casino. There he is intrigued by the obsessive life she and her father share, risking their fortunes and their futures on the spin of a roulette wheel. At first the writer is a mere observer. But soon he is drawn inexorably into a madness that threatens to destroy him. An all-star cast headed by Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner headlines this lush period drama inspired by Fyodor Dostoyevsky's The Gambler, etching portraits of sinners great and small caught in a vortex of self-destruction. Robert Siodmak (The Killers, The Spiral Staircase) directs, capturing the grandeur of red-velvet gambling halls and the desperate seediness of cramped pawnshops.

Diary Of A Gambler
This movie accurately portrays the cost, both financial and emotional, that excessive if not uncontrollable gambling has on those who believe (wrongly) that it is anything but a vice. Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner are both excellent in their opposite roles. He, the gentleman who initially preaches restraint. Her, the iconic beauty who ultimately leads him directly into the fire. The story also takes other turns with moments of "spiritual" interaction and soul-searching brought on by awkardness---all of it related to the self, inner conflict gamblers experience with the "rush" of wagering.

Oldie AND Goodie
An old move (1930s) about gambling addiction. This is not a feel good movie, but does a good job leading the viewer into the downward spiral of gambling addiction.

great sinner
A beautiful print of a very under-valued film, with fine direction and some terrific character performances from such as Ethel Barrymore, Frank Morgan and Agnes Moorehead, plus Ava Gardner at her loveliest. One of the best films about gambling, second only to the wonderful La Baie des Anges.
