The central sacred text of Thelema Liber AL vel Legis, commonly known as The Book of the Law, is the central sacred text of Thelema. Written by Aleister Crowley, with his wife Rose Edith Kelly who wrote two phrases into the finished manuscript, Crowley claimed it was dictated to him by a preternatural being calling himself Aiwass. The book's three chapters are largely written in a first-person narrative by the Thelemic deities Nuit, Hadit, and Ra-Hoor-Khuit respectively. Through the reception of the Book, Crowley proclaimed the arrival of a new stage in the spiritual evolution of humanity, to be known as the "Æon of Horus".The primary precept of this new aeon is the charge to "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law". The book contains three chapters, each of which was alleged to be written down in one hour, beginning at noon, on 8 April, 9 April, and 10 April in Cairo, Egypt, in the year 1904.Crowley says that the author was an entity named Aiwass, whom he later referred to as his personal Holy Guardian Angel. Crowley himself wrote "Certain very serious questions have arisen with regard to the method by which this Book was obtained. I do not refer to those doubts—real or pretended—which hostility engenders, for all such are dispelled by study of the text; no forger could have prepared so complex a set of numerical and literal puzzles[...]" The book is often referred to simply as Liber AL, Liber Legis or just AL, though technically the latter two refer only to the manuscript. Review: Classic - Do what thou will shall be the whole of the law Love is the law Love under will Review: To Do as thy Will is the Whole of the Law: Love under Will. - Thelema: takes its' dramatic and infamous LAW from the ancient sources of The Sumerians, as well as the Book of revelations within the Catholic( Christian) Bible. Clearly and sensuously written, it states a definite rebuttal of the absurd Puritan status Quo, while reveling in esoteric erotic imagery. This IS a living book of Spells, and a clarion call to become through Nature's gifts , a fully evolved Being. {Because every Man or Woman is a Star} Crowley writes with the energy of the great showman of Magic sex and mysticism that he was. Though he is bombastic, I cannot think of anybody who was more fascinating, and more modern for the time he lived in: The most evil man in the world, the"Great Beast" was and is an adoring and passionate soul, with WAY more compassion and beauty within, than the sordid and hateful Christians of this Era. Hailz to Crowley!

Thelemic sacred text book
So the average reader might read the first chapter, if that..realistically the first page, and think it's just rantings by a mad man, the "devil worshipper". The problem was that Crowley was and still is vilified by the church. When a person sees you reading Crowley you get the "dirty look". Those that do study Crowley's work know it's his works are very in depth and can be quite clever. My favorite quote is "Every man and woman is a star". Sounds insane, but the meaning is so perfectly explained in Lon Milo DuQuette's "Understanding Aleister Crowley's Thoth Tarot". I find that DuQuette is able to "decode" some of the more crazier parts of Crowley's works. The Book of the Law is the "sacred text" of Thelema. It was supposively dictated to Crowley on his wedding night from an entity named Aiwass. The book only has 3 chapters, in the 1st person perspectives of Thelemic deities Nuit, Hadit, and Ra-Hoor-Khuit. The Book of the Law may be short in pages, but the amount of knowledge is intense and should be revisited as I find with most Crowley works, you just seem to find or understand more each time. So to completely review this book, it's difficult to explain to those that have not read it. It is not a "read through" book. It's very rich and loaded with interesting logic.

Do what thou wilt shall be....what?
Let me say this, I gave this three stars because I am not a fan of Thelema nor this book. It is well written even if terribly complicated. I did not read this book until I had studied Crowley himself that way I would have a better understanding of this influential book. Even with my knowledge of Thelema, LaVey, etc. I found this a very difficult read. I do not recommend this for the average joe as a first read in their study of Thelema or satanism. First study the man himself and what others have written or said about his writings, THEN read this book.

Better Than I Expected
I purchased this book because I’ve heard a lot about it. I wasn’t sure what to expect because it’s very different from the religious beliefs I was raised with. This book is a fantastic read. It opened my mind to new ideas and new perspectives. My husband also read a copy. I don’t want to reveal much about this book because if you’re here reading reviews, you’re meant to read the book. Trust yourself and buy it.

It is what you'd expect.
It's the Book of the Law by Crowley. You're ordering this because it's what you specifically want but truth be told: DuQuette's book on Magick of Aleister Crowley also includes the Book of the Law, so if you have extra cash, just get that. But if you need a book to keep notes in or just to have specifically this, by all means, get it.

Channeling of prophetic energies through the nervous system of A. Crowley
It is said of this book that it was written by Aleister Crowley in the course of his stay in Egypt together with his partner Rose Kelly. After a series of introductory rituals and synchronicities, the three chapters of the book were written down over three consecutive days. Crowley described an entity called Aiwass, which dictated the book to him. The genesis of the book alone may sound extraordinary to many - to me it has as well. The enlightened person of the 21st century is often inclined here to interpret the genesis and the person Crowley as abstruse and bullshit. In fact, it has turned out that Crowley was not only an absolutely brilliant consciousness researcher, but that there is a great deal that cannot be processed through the crude and often inappropriate tool called the mind. This does not mean that something cannot exist just because our concepts cannot allow it. The map is not the territory. Now to the book itself: Like very much written by Crowley, this work is peppered with analogies, mythology, metaphors, and riddles that must first be deciphered. Deciphering Crowley's works is what creates the effect in one's nervous system and perception. No one can do the work for you. Therefore, I can recommend this book to anyone who wants to get to the deeper meanings of knowledge - intensive occupation with it can bring about exciting changes in life.
