The bible for Psych trainees
This book is focused on the core work Psych trainees do and loaded with pragmatic advice that applies directly to our jobs. When i encounter new situations (e.g. recently reviewing a patient who had come to the UK seeking asylum), I see what this book has to say about it. Written in plain English and with a readable friendly quality. Honestly I wish I'd had this book when I was starting out as a Trainee because the information and advice it carries for common situations and presentations are so useful and of a "stuff you really ought to know but are already in too deep to ask about" nature. And as this book gives such good practical guidance on how to do your job well, it is very relevant to CASC examinations, and was a core text for my revision. Recently all new Core Trainees at SLaM Trust received a copy and this should definitely continue as a practice at all mental health Trusts! As I say, this is The bible; don't be at work without it.

This is a great text for core trainees- really accessible and highly relevant to clinical practice. I used this on my return to acute inpatient work as a higher specialist trainee coming back from three years away doing research, and have found it invaluable as a no-nonsense practical guide to working safely and effectively on the wards. This book is unique in that it covers pretty much everything you need to know day to day as a doctor working in psychiatry, and so is useful as both an aid to improving clinical practice and as a CASC revision tool.

Extremely useful book for practicalities required of a psychiatrist training and working in the UK. The authors themselves explain why the contents can be repetitious, because of the way it is intended to be referred to. Perhaps there would be scope for a more compact edition in future. I had a mixed reaction to the boxed quotes from trainees - some were interesting, some a bit trite. It's a good idea in some ways but perhaps could be omitted in the compact version. Necessarily it is pitched at a level which assumes the reader may know very little. For me as a psychiatrist whose training and experience was overseas it was very useful indeed, containing a lot of practical information that isn't easy to find.

Highly recommended to trainee psychiatrists.
I got the kindle addition of this book and have found it to be really, really useful. It manages to be accessible, thorough, practical and 'complete.' It deals with everything from everyday minutiae to the big picture; no mean feat! When I started Psych training, I found myself having to use a range of different books depending on the kind of information or advice I needed. This book would have done the lot (and better!) Thoroughly recommended to any trainee psychiatrist.
