Wow! That's sharp!
Wow! This can opener is sharp! It took a second to get used to where it needed to be positioned on the can we were opening, but once we figured it out, it easily pierced the lid and smoothly cut the lid from the can. It didn't even leave a little piece of metal once the lid was completely cut off. I'm so used to running the can opener a second time over the lip of the can to push down the tiny little metal piece that is left poking up, that I was surprised when I couldn't even find one.Update: After about a year-and-a-half, the can opener was no longer sharp. It hardly opened cans any more.We donated it to Good Will because we had no more use for it.The can opener pierced the lid easily. Turning the handle was smooth and took as much force as any other can opener I've used. In other words, not too tough, but not like melted butter. So far, so good. I'll report back after I've opened a few hundred cans.Sept. 2017 Update:Well, we quit using this can opener. The gears seemed to get looser and it was getting harder to get a good "pinch" on a can. Also, the knife blade seemed to have lost its original sharpness. It doesn't slice right into the can lid on the first puncture any more. After 2 or 3 tries, I can get it to puncture well, but that won't guarantee a clean slice all the way around the can lid.As soon as I can find a decent replacement, this opener is going to the kid's college-dishes box or in the trash.

Well built but concerned about "smooth" edges.
This is definitely a luxury model can opener. Construction is rock solid, and the fit and finish are very nice. The action is very smooth, and the turning handle is large enough that a normal can is opened with manageable effort, even for one who is developing arthritis in the hands as I am. I have limited the review to 3 stars because it is advertised as producing "safety smooth edges", and with the cutting wheel cutting downward through the top of the can lid I don't see how it can guarantee smooth edges, particularly on the lid itself. On the cans I have opened, the edges on the can proper have been smooth enough and quite safe due to the precision of the operation, but the edges of the lid have been sharp enough to cut if improperly handled. I'm also concerned that the quality of the edge produced on the can might become less smooth over time if wear were to loosen the fit of the parts controlling the cutting wheel. I would give it 5 stars if it opened the can lid by cutting horizontally through the outer edge of the lid, so that the wheel did not contact the food and the operation really left zero sharp edges. If the edge condition is not of concern to a prospective purchaser, this is a very well constructed can opener that should provide reliable service for many years.

A great can opener for weak or arthritic hands
My long search for a good can opener is over. This is IT. I was really surprised that buying a can opener turned out to be such a long and involved process - years past, I grabbed one at the supermarket for 59 cents (it WAS a long time ago) and that was it. After about 25 years of loyal service, my old can opener was lost in a move and thus began my quest. This can opener is safe, easy to use and does the job, which is more that can be said for the electric, manual and battery-run can openers that preceded it.The hand grip actually is easy to use, a vast improvement over the heroic efforts it took me to budge that of the manual can opener supposedly designed specifically for arthritic hands. The lids of cans are jagged, but unlike those produced by the electric opener, you can't cut down trees with them. And this one is safe, unlike the battery-run gizmo that only stopped running when the batteries were ejected - a process that risked the removal of one or more of my fingers.

Made in China
I searched Made in America, can opener. The only thing that came up was too expensive for very simple designs. I didn't want to pay $25 for an old school opener with no bottle cap remover, etc. So I searched Made in Germany. This opener came up and the seller manufacturer had good reviews. I recieved it today, and clearly the box states Made in China. What is the issue here? It's too difficult to find where products are made! The metal will be touching my food,so I wanted a different point of origin. I'm keeping it, whatever. I don't even eat that many canned goods. I gave 4 stars bc it is what it's supposed to be. If it breaks under normal use, I'll update. It's just irritating. The company obviously has this information easily available, it just isn't passing the info on to the customer

Strong, Practical and Easy to Use
The pull-tab on a dog food can had broken off. I figured I'd just use my can opener but it did exactly nothing, just rolled the can round and round. So my options were to throw away a perfectly good can of dog food or get a better can opener. (I'd been thinking about this anyway so I didn't make this purchase just because of this random can opening challenge.)The reviews have been very good for this tool and I've found that I agree. The tool is substantial and I was concerned that the arthritis in my hands would make it difficult to use, but it's well-balanced and the action is smooth. It's also got a deeper blade than my old opener and opened up that can of dog food.

Works like a good quality item should work
This is a great can opener! Only time will tell but this seems very well designed and well built. It does just what it claims, opens a can easily and leaves no ridge to cut yourself on around the inside of the can. It's not one of those that takes the whole top off, the seam is still left on the can. But it is smooth and clean. Works great in my hands. Granted they are larger than most, but I don't have to put out much effort to make it work. Unlike the last model I got that stripped the tops of the gear teeth on the first can. I am a former transmission builder so I know at least a little bit about gears meshing or not... It costs more to return than it is worth. This one however has not given me any sign of giving up and after a month of use, it is still doing a great job. The handles and turning knob are larger than normal and that makes it much easier to grip. I have no complaints and that is saying something...
