Great value w/ 2 trash can, and REDESIGNED battery chamber
Quick Summary:* Great value with a large and small trash can included* Large trash can features a redesigned battery chamber that takes 3 x C batteries* Small trash can takes 4 x D batteries in a compartment protected in the bottom* Great oblong shape for tighter spacesDetailed Review:After purchasing the Nine Stars DZT-50-9 Infrared Touchless Stainless Steel Trash Can, 13.2-Gallon, I was disappointed to find that the battery compartment in two separate chambers for the D batteries began to rust. As we use this trash can in the kitchen, it's not uncommon to throw away table scraps or cutaways from vegetables, etc. The old battery compartment had two rather flimsy covers and the battery contacts consisted of push on contacts that rusted easily. That garbage can became non-functional and we now use it without the lid.In the interim, I had also bought the very highly reviewed iTouchless Deodorizer Touch-Free Sensor 13-Gallon Automatic Stainless-Steel Trash Can. We actually love that trash can too. It has a few design features, including an odor-free chamber that you can place a bag to absorb odors. However, that trash can is a square shape and although we really liked it for upstairs, we needed a narrower/wider oblong trash can for the kitchen. With some hesistation, I ordered the trash can set here. Even if I had to replace it in two years, I figured the value with an included small trash can might make it worth it. I also hoped that the rusting battery compartment was just a fluke on the first one.Immediately when I opened the new trash can, I noticed that the battery compartment had been completely redesigned. Not only did the large trash can now take only 3 C batteries, but it also was a single chamber with a very tight cover. I'm hopeful with this redesign that the rusting issue I had in the very similar looking old model is a thing of the past.As for the small trash can, it interestingly takes 4 D batteries, but the battery chamber is held in the bottom beneath a plastic bucket that houses the trash. Moisture should definitely NOT be an issue for this small trash can.Overall, I'm quite happy with the purchase and thrilled with the value. If you've ever eyed SimpleHuman trash cans and suffered sticker shock, this Nine Stars package is a great relief.

It lasted 2 years! I’m buying it again!
I purchased this in June 2023 and am just now ready to buy it again. I only replaced the batteries once and the only reason I’m purchasing again is because the lid isn’t closing properly anymore. The small trash can still works perfectly, since it’s not opened and closed all day by 5 people.Trash capacity is standard, it contains the smells, it is sturdy and durable. I’m ready to purchase again!

Good product, battery cover might break eventually
Broke the battery cover than the automated can was useless. Had for many years, held up for a long time before it broke. If you got a big dog he can easily open it, but was never a problem really. Sometimes the small can turns off because power button hits the wall but the small can is still working amazing

Pleased with cans! BUT Warning: description contains a mistake
The media could not be loaded. I received the two trash cans, and was able to set them up pretty quickly. However there was a mistake in the description that caused me to rush out to get new batteries. The description said that BOTH trash cans operate on D batteries, so I had those ready. However this is not so. The large Trash Can operates on three C batteries (see photo of the trash can lid upside down), and the small Trash Can operates on four D batteries.LARGE TRASH CANPhoto #1 shows the trash can open and closed. The outside dimensions of the large trash can with the cover on are:28" height x 16" width x 11" depthThe inside dimensions of the large trash can with the cover OFF:22" height x 15.5" width x 10" depthThe tall can with the lid open is 37 inchesThe inside dimensions of the large trash can with the cover ON:11.5" wide left to right and 6.75" front to backA dinner sized paper plate of 9" in diameter can be deposited without bending width-wise, but has to angled down since the front to back is narrower than 9".The trash bag that fits this can best is 13 gallon trash bag. My favorite is Kirkland 13 gallon Kirkland Signature Drawstring Kitchen Trash Bags - 13 Gallon - Xl Size - 200 CountThe big Trash Can operates on three "C" batteries. The battery compartment is under the cover. The battery compartment is easy to reach, and batteries are easy to change. The switch to turn on the Trash Can is also under the cover. Photo #2 of the Trash Can cover upside down. The Trash Can automatic opening mechanism is rather sensitive but I am able to walk by it in my small kitchen without activating it. The cover operates smoothly and closes well preventing odors from escaping. The Trash Can comes with a handy ring, which allows you to neatly tuck in the trash bag inside the can. Photo #3 shows the ring positioned correctly and incorrectly. The first time I put it on the trash bag was visible on the outside. The correct way of using the ring is to insert the bag into the ring, fold the sides of the bag over the ring, place the ring on the sides of the waste basket inside the Trash Can and tuck in the sides of the bag between the basket and the Trash Can.The two problems I encountered are related to the batteries.(1) Wrong size specified in description as I mentioned earlier(2) I normally prefer to use rechargeable AA batteries with jackets that convert them to C or D batteries as needed. However the construction of the large Trash Can is such that the batteries with jackets do not make proper contact in the compartment and are ejected. The regular "C" batteries work fine.SMALL TRASH CANPhoto #4 show the small Trash Can opened and closed. The outside dimensions of the small trash can with the cover on are:13" height x 10.5" width - 6" depthThe inside dimensions of the small trash can with the cover off:11" height x 9" width x 5" depthThe small can with the lid open is 20 inchesThe trash bag that fits this can best is 4 gallon trash bag. My favorite is Glad 4 gallon due to its nice thickness Glad Small Garbage Bags, 4 Gallon 30 bags.Note that Amazon price for 4 gallon trash bags currently is not good, I purchase my bags at a local grocery store (where the cost works out to 5 cents per bag). Amazon price often changes hopefully per bag price will help you determine when the price becomes good. The small Trash Can operates on four "D" batteries. The battery compartment is located on the bottom, under the waste basket. The battery compartment is a little awkward to reach since you need to have both hands into a fairly small tight tall area. Changing batteries of this Trash Can is harder than those of the large Trash Can. The switch that turns the Trash Can on is on the outside, in the back of the Trash Can.The small Trash Can is little less sensitive than the large one, which I thought was okay since in the tight space of the bathroom it is better that it does not react all the time. It comes with a removable waste basket. The small Trash Can has no ring to hold the garbage bag, and the fit between the removable waste basket and the Trash Can itself is very tight. I had trouble keeping the bag inside between the walls of the inside and outside container. I wound up using scotch tape to tape the sides of the bag to the can so it is not pushed up as I insert the basket back into the Trash Can. When I looked at the instructions, the instructions showed the use without the trash can liner. However, this is not practical as the inside of the bin is going to start smelling bad without the liner. When I closed the Can the trash bag taped to the basket was still bunching a bit at the lip level, and therefore the lid did not close tightly. This means some ordors will escape. Photo #5 show close up of the top the Can with lid open. The three issues I encountered with the small Trash Can:(1) The difficulty of inserting the trash bag. I can see that it will require fussing with it every time.(2) The lid does not close tightly because trash liner is pushed up by bunched up liner(3) I normally prefer to use rechargeable AA batteries with jackets that convert them to C or D batteries as needed. However the construction of the small Trash Can is such that the batteries with jackets do not make proper contact in the compartment and are ejected. The regular "D" batteries work fine.As I was doing research on this product before the purchase, I found a comment by H.Campbell that described how to solve a problem when the lid does not fully open even after the battery has been changed. This comment was one of several comments and was easy to miss. I am including the solution in this review so it is easier to find as several people mentioned this problem.Resetting the lid mechanism after the battery change:PROBLEM: The lid only opens 1 inch even after a battery change.SOLUTION: Manually push the lid into the fully open position and then forced the lid back a little bit more until you hear two clicks from the hinge area. Release the lid (it will go back into the closed position). From there on the automatic lid opener will works like new, going into the fully open position, as before.Overall I am pleased with the Trash Cans. The small issues I encountered with each are not deal breakers. The Trash Cans look good, and open and close well.Update 6/30/11After two weeks of using the trash cans I have two tips1) The tall trash can was opening more than I preferred. I have a small kitchen and often when I walked by it would opened and the trash odor escaped. I found that if I turn the trash can around to face the wall it is totally not sensitive when I walk by and it is still convenient to to use and not bad looking.2) It is difficult to put the trash liner into a small can because the fit between the waste basket and the trash can is very tight. However fitting the liner is a bit easier if you flip the handle of the waste basket forward (or totally remove it).Update 6/24/14Someone asked me where to find a replacement ring for the large trash can. I searched Amazon for "replacement ring for DZT-50-9" and found that it is being sold separately:http://www.amazon.com/Stars-Replacement-Stainless-Models-Gallon/dp/B008A8HPV6/ref=sr_1_4?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1403614641&sr=1-4&keywords=replacement+ring+for+DZT-50-9I am enjoying the convenience of touch-less trash cans! It is like having a helpful hand whenever I need it. Recommend!Ali Julia reviewP.S.Update 7/7/2013 Both cans are still running on the original set of batteries (25 1/2 months)Update 12/1/2013 The small trash can became slugging opening and closing, so finally I replaced the original battery (2 years and 6 months of daily use). The large can is still pretty snappy and is running on the original batteries.Update 4/26/2014 The original batteries on the large trash can died this week. 2 years and 10 months of daily use. This is much better than I expected.Update 5/5/2023. Still using both trash can, have not had to change batteries too many times. Came to look at this review to remind myself what batteries the small can takes :-) It has been so long that I forgot, it still kinda works so I wanted to have the batteries on hand before I removed the old ones.

New Look & Works Better
I finally replaced a 25+ year old 13gal push-button plastic trash can in my kitchen. After all those years, the button was a little sensitive; plus opening it for something like coffee grounds always required wiping the lid after.I didn't want my trash can in the open kitchen floor. This was the second one I tried; the first wouldn't work in the pantry. I found the "sweet spot" for this one in the pantry is 3" from the door. It does tap the bottom shelf a little when it opens, but it opens when I want it to & closes when I'm done, regardless of whether the door is open or closed.I thought the smaller can was going to replace the wastebasket in my home office, but I chose to put it in the garage to replace the old pedal can that never seemed to open as much as I wanted it to.
