A Child's First Book of Trump

I bought this based on an interview with the author that I heard on NPR. The book is altogether wonderful. The rhyme, meter, and illustrations really work well in the Seuss tradition, bringing fun, surprise, and play into each page. Like good Seuss, it stands up to multiple readings. It also has served me well in engaging my children in discussions of American and World politics. My daughters are just out of middle school, and it is difficult to engage them for more than a few seconds in anything besides their own social milieu. But this book was fun and funny, and on surface light enough to draw them in, and then draw them out. They even began asking questions and testing out their own opinions. Best of all, the book ends with the message that Trump is not The Trump, he is not unique, and there are practical ways in life of dealing with a trump, or a class of loud bullies full of bunk. Like all good children's books, this has life lessons with a spoonful of sugar.

Excellent and funny rhyming takedown of Trump. In my opinion, this book is for adults anyway, so it’s not leading children down some path of disrespect for the office of the President of the USA. Trump himself respects no one other than himself, so he doesn’t deserve anyone’s respect; he doesn’t automatically get respect from US citizens or from people around the world just because he sits in the Oval Office. That’s not how it works. If anything, teach your children well: that they earn respect by showing it to others, being forthright and honest, and that it takes sincerity, practice, open mindedness, acceptance, understanding and compassion — that’s a great lesson. Wish we could teach our baby DJT but he has none of the requisite qualities!

Witty and cautionary, with a sprinkling of hope

this is amazing.... Michael Ian Black is just super funny (in general) and he nails what a "TRUMP" is in a very sussian way. the Illustrations are spot on. without saying exactly who Trump is, the story guides children on who to look out for when dealing with people who may exhibit certain qualities of D. Trump.... (trying to be un-biased here :) ) if you know Michael Ian Black, and like his comedy, or also funny and smart commentary written like Dr Suess (which his stuff USED to be commentary in the first place!), then you will love this book..... HIGHLY recommend :) (its also completely safe for kids as far as language and images go.)

After seeing michael on some late night show (I can never keep track of who had which guests) I immediately preordered this book, because it sounded like it could be hilarious. My 14 year old and I read it as soon as it showed up today, and it did not disappoint. It's really well done. Written the rhyming cadence that is very common for children's books, but with all the inside jokes only adults would get, it's an odd combination that could of easily failed, but, no, michael did a great job, it totally works. Assuming trump isn't successful, this will be the most entertaining election season in my lifetime. Trump is comedy gold.

Hysterical!

I thought this book very clever when I FIRST saw it during the campaign. Written and illustrated in "Dr.Suess" style (rhyming) with a lot of imagination, it presents an amusing picture of Candidate Trump, but seems somewhat disrespectful now that he's PRESIDENT TRUMP. This book was NOT written for kids, though some older kids might understand and enjoy it.

I bought it for my 5-year old nephew who will be coming to stay with me for a year. I wish I could get this in Spanish since he will be starting bilingual kindergarten in three weeks, but I think some of the humor would lost in translation which is maybe why it's only available in English. Of course, my father who is a staunch Trump supporter got his nose out of joint. My mom laughed. I thought the book struck just the right balance of silliness, so as not to be caustic or biting. I'm sure in the next 100 or so days Mr. Trump will provide many teachable moments that I can use to educate my young charge on how a gentleman should behave.

Does Trump have redeeming features? Most sentient beings believe not. But he does have one, he has reawakened satire from its slumbers. Plenty of fun for grown-ups here - my wife first spotted it in a museum bookshop and insisted we buy it. My co-workers have been greatly amused too - don't work with anyone who has a good word for Agent Orange.
