Is the pillow comfortable and adequately sized for short people? I'm 5'1".

I think so. I have this one and the DMI ortho bed wedge. I actually prefer the DMI one and think it would be better for a shorter person. The slope isnt as long so shorter thighs would fit better. Also this one your feet hang off, which isn't comfortable for me to sleep with. I was very happy to have both though. That way I could try out both when I was hurting after the surgery to see what felt better. Would it be possible to sleep on side?

Yes, u can sleep on your side with this wedge pillow . I do for sure. Love it. Helps with Asthma and acid reflux.

How would this work for a person that is a side sleeper in?

I bought it because I had neck surgery. It's firm, so I can still sleep on my side. I put a pillow on it and it supports me nicely.
