My wife and i received 2 of the pillows today and upon using them this evening they have a very strong alarming mold type smell. is this normal?

Yes. If you read the paperwork that comes with the pillow it tells you that it may need to air out to get rid of the manufacturing smell. That is why the cover is unzipped.

Is this pillow really cooling ?

Yes, this pillow does have a cooling effect. However, if you are using a heavy or flannel pillowcase, the cooling is not as strong. I also find that when it colder outside, the gel cooling pad is cooler.

Does this come rolled up or flat in a box?

It come in a rolled bag . It will be at flat shape in 2 hours .
