Harry Potter and the Cursed Child - Parts One and Two: The Official Playscript of the Original West End Production

3 1/2 stars. I completely get why many HP fans will be disappointed with this, but I have to admit: I really enjoyed it. I'd love to see this story play out on stage.So yeah, I understand the sad feelings. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has a completely different vibe. Aside from being a play, it's also a more mature, character-driven, less magical story. It does not feel like an eighth Harry Potter book at all; there's a real disconnect between this play and the other seven novels. And you know what? I'm so glad.I guess it's just what you're hoping for. To be honest, I never wanted another Harry Potter book. The thought of extending a series I loved so much actually made me NOT want to read this. I got to the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and thought it was magical perfection - the story had completed its arc in full and I put it aside feeling a slight melancholy, but a whole lot of satisfaction. I didn't want more.However, if you went crazy needing more from the HP series, you'll probably be disappointed by this. If you feel there's a gap where something HP is missing, then I don't think this will fill it. Separate the two in your mind, and you have a better chance of liking it. Because this is something different - and I'm happy about it.First, of course, it's a play. Right away it's going to be something unlike what we've seen before. I don't usually love to read plays, especially modern ones, but this one is very readable because the dialogue is wonderful. I don't know why people are saying "it's so obvious JKR didn't write most of this" because I think her style is all over it - the very fact that this play (which is meant to be viewed on stage) can be just as easily read like a book tells me JKR had a lot of input.Also, it's funny. Much more consistently comical than the books, but with the same style of humour - i.e. lots of Ron being a buffoon.Hermione: If some part of Voldemort survived, in whatever form, we need to be prepared. And I’m scared.Ginny: I’m scared too.Ron: Nothing scares me. Apart from Mum.The plot leaves a little something to be desired. Again, it feels different from the main series. It's not so much about the world and magic, but more about relationships, conflicts (particularly between Harry and Albus) and the dialogue between characters. I suppose this makes more sense in a play, where the story unravels through dialogue and not through an omniscient narrator.And, as I touched upon earlier, it feels... older. I don't know how well kids will appreciate the jokes about growing old and how Ron now says "oof" every time he sits down. Or the family drama between Harry and his son, Albus. But I liked it.I'm happy with this addition. I truly am. If it had been too similar to the seven novels, I feel it would have risked reopening a series that had been closed in a great place. Instead, we have something very unique and, for me, very entertaining. Some of the staging directions also leave me excited about seeing the play (when I win the lottery or acquire a magic wand, maybe).One thing I have to say that I said in another comment thread: NOW, it's time to stop. This was a risky experiment and it turned out to be fun, but JKR needs to leave this world alone now. I really do not want to read about old-age Harry, Ron and Hermione rolling around in magical wheelchairs. So, just stop.

You will love reading it if you have already read/watched all seven parts of harry potter.

The book quality as well as the content inside the book is very good.It was really fun reading this book. But the book is pretty short. I wish they would make a movie on this playscript as it is a perfect story and it fits the end of the last movie.The book starts from ending of the last part of harry Harry Potter (Deathly Hallows part 2) . Harry leaving his son Albus Severus Potter (Named after two headmasters of Hogwarts Albus Dumbledore and Severus Snape) to 9 3/4 Station boarding the train to Hogwarts.It has a lot of plot twists and things that you would never expect. So I think everyone who has watched full series of Harry Potter should read this book.

I was eagerly waiting for this part of the series in a written form. I had seen the movie and because of the movie content i was really excited for the novel. When this product released, the fare was quite high so i had to wait for the price to go down. After a week, I ordered this product when the rates went down. The delivery was on time and i was happy with the quality of the product. The novel was really interesting and it did meet with my expectations. The genre of this novel is adventure and thrill. I hope this review helps you.

Ahh, A HP book and any rating less than 5 is blasphemy.Went back to my childhood days.Though it is not the same as the original series , yet something is better than nothing when it comes to HP series.Take my review with a pinch of salt as I am BIASED when it comes to HP books and I love everything about it

The book doesnt look like original print. The quality of overall book is bad. There are dark spots all over the book. It was so tightly bound, that opening middle pages was also difficult.Ordered a return.

Tout Potterhead qui se respecte lira ce livre. Alors oui, c'est le script de la pièce, pour ceux qui ne sont pas habitués, la forme peut être déroutante (voir décevante), mais une fois habitué, vous entrerez facilement dans l'univers de JL Rowling.Comme vous aurez (forcément ?) lu les volumes d'Harry Potter, votre imaginaire reconstruira l'univers familier de Poudlard et du monde des sorciers et vous pourrez goûter à nouveau au plaisir de la magie Rowlingienne.Ce spin off est génial, asseyez vous, détendez vous, enjoy :-)

(English version below)Cela faisait trop longtemps que je n'avais pas pu retourner dans le monde d'Harry Potter, j'ai donc dévoré ce livre dès sa sortie, même si je ne le commente qu'aujourd'hui.Même si le trio "Hermione / Ron / Harry" m'a manqué (ils sont là, mais chacun est occupé avec sa propre vie et ils sont devenus adultes, donc forcément plus ennuyeux... ;) ), le duo Scorpius / Albus m'a vraiment convaincue.Ah, Scorpius, c'est mon personnage préféré : j'ai adoré ses réparties. Pas facile d'être le fils de Draco Malfoy, mais je trouve qu'il s'en sort très bien.J'ai également beaucoup apprécié ces "fins alternatives" que nous propose JK Rowling : voir ce qui "aurait pu" se produire m'a vraiment plu.Il est vrai qu'il ne s'agit pas d'un roman, et que les scènes s'enchaînent avec une rapidité stupéfiante, ce qui donne un livre un peu court, au final.Mais cela donne surtout TRES envie d'aller voir la pièce !!En tout cas, je le recommande à tous les amoureux d'Harry Potter- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -It had been too long since my last trip into the Harry Potter world, so I just devored the book as soon as it was published (though I only comment it today).Even if I missed the complicity of Harry, Ron and Hermione (they're in the story but each living his/her own life and being adults, so as tedious as adults can be... ;) ) I fell in love with the Scorpius / Albus pair.Scorpius has even become my favourite character, with his witticism. It is not that easy to be the son of Draco Malfoy but hats off to him for what he makes out of that...I also loved the glimpses into these "alternative endings" which JK Rowling offers in this story.It is true that this is not a novel : you switch from one scene to another very quickly, and so get to the end very fast.But it really gives the urge to SEE the play !In any case, if you're a Harry Potter fan, you should really enjoy this book.

3.5 of 4 stars[...]This is a difficult book to review I admit – mainly because of mixed feelings, which to be clear from the outset does not mean that I disliked the book at all, just that I had certain issues.I don’t want to give away too much about the plot in this review. Time has moved on. Harry and Ginny have three children and their middle child Albus is about to attend Hogwarts. It isn’t easy living in the shadow of such a famous wizard – big boots to fill and Albus and Harry find themselves with an ever increasing wedge between them.So, the good, the bad and the other!I just loved getting to read about some of the characters again. It was like a trip down memory lane and it just gave me that happy glow that you sometimes achieve by reading about old beloved characters. Okay, this isn’t written by Rowling and so it isn’t the same – but it was just still nice to revisit them. Plus I loved some of the different threads and ideas that this plot allowed us to explore – but I won’t elaborate on that point.Now on the counter to the above – I felt like the characters hadn’t grown. Which, in one way I liked, because I actually wanted to revisit the characters that I know and love. But, on the other hand – this is twenty odd years later so it felt to a certain extent that they should have changed in some ways. I think maybe in some respects that could be my own brain not allowing them to grow up if you follow me. It felt really odd seeing Harry and Ginny and Ron and Hermione as parents. I don’t think i could fully get my head around it. I felt like Ginny came across a bit wishy washy and Ron also felt to have lost some of his ‘character’. In terms of the new characters though Scorpius was really good – I confess that I enjoyed his part more than that of Albus.Two things that are totally personal to me and therefore might not affect others – one, I’m not overly fond of reading plays and, two, I’m a bit of a stickler about time travel.So, and I realise that this will just sound crazy, but when I preordered this (and, yes, I did rush to buy a copy) even though it clearly says ‘a new play’ on the cover I don’t think I fully realised that it was actually going to be in a play format. Why, what was I expecting! A play that isn’t a play! Really! Anyway, obviously I’m a raging maniac but that’s irrelevant. That misconception was my own fault. I think I was being told it was a play but I was in denial somehow! Would I have still picked up a copy if I’d really understood that it was a play – I think I probably would have because I’m a completist in some ways and so it felt necessary to read this. But, for the record, I’m not a person who really reads plays because for me a play is a different experience. I just feel that it’s something to be enjoyed on a stage, acted out with backdrops.On to the time travel. I love and hate time travel in books. There’s just an element of chicken and egg and what came first.Basically, at the end of the day, I just decided to say to myself ‘sod it’ and read the book and decide to just go with the flow and quit all my over thinking and in that respect I actually enjoyed this. It was a quick and easy read. I loved getting to revisit Hogwarts and I enjoyed the rewind to certain elements from the previous books plus all the characters.In summary, I had a good time with this once I got into the flow of the play format and once I left my over zealous scrutiny at the door.I feel that this is a book that people will either want to pick up or not whether or not I gush about it or not. As it happens, I actually had a good time reading it. It’s not perfect and I had to change my mindset but once I’d done so I thought it was well worth the read. In fairness, and to be honest, I would have preferred Rowling to write any follow up to the Harry Potter series but that didn’t happen and at least this was I got to go back and spend a little more time in a world that I enjoy.

I was very excited to pick this up, and would certainly describe it as an entertaining read. I can't say I particularly enjoyed it however.First thing to be clear about- it's a play script, for anybody who wasn't aware. Personally that's what I was expecting, but I know it's not for everyone. As a script, it's writing and structure are good.The reason I didn't enjoy it too much is that it doesn't really fit in the "world" JK Rowling created through the Harry Potter series (and now in Fantastic Beasts). The plot relies heavily on time turners, which feels a lot like it's been done before; however the mechanics of time travel are different to Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. If you can overlook this, the plot is reasonably straightforward and has a genuinely shocking twist in it.***SPOILER ALERT***The difficulty with the twist is that it seems ultimately to detract from the plot rather than add to it, making the near-religious fanaticism of a key Death Eater almost romantic.By the time you reach this point, however, the character of many of the key players has changed considerably, and I personally found them much less likable and more difficult to identify with.The plot also feels somewhat time worn as it recycles a key villain of the Harry Potter series, rather than advancing the "world" further.Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is entertaining, but in my opinion disappointing.
