Stainless steel cables are the easiest upgrade to make your brakes smoother and more reliable. Non-stainless cables inevitably rust and become rough and eventually immobile within their housings. Stainless cables just keep on working.

These brake cables are very high quality and an incredible value. I verified that they are zinc-plated carbon steel using an XRF Analyzer which picked up zinc and iron and no chromium. The ends were perfectly welded to prevent fraying. The shipment was nicely packaged and arrived on time. I gave these a 4 star rating instead of 5 stars because the description indicates they cable material is stainless, which it is not. The original cables on the two bicycles I repaired were also zinc-plated carbon steel and only slightly tarnished on the one bike that is 28 years old.
