STOUT BUILT
The probe is made of thick metal with heavy duty grips & strong welds. Very well built with some weight to it.

Sturdy! Efficient.
As a consulting arborist, I keep this in my tool kit bag and use it for pulling a soil sample to observe clients' soil types and watering penetration patterns. The step makes it more easily useful than other similar in same bag - but a little more awkward to store.

Not designed well
I had a previous soil sampler that worked great but needed something longer for my new trees. Because the tip of this thing is narrower than the barrel (I guess anyway) it often resulted in the dirt not pushing through and I was left with no soil sample. The shorter device has no such problem... guessing because the tube is all the same size? I tried plunging this one slowly, quickly, and at different angles... but no improvement. Also didn't seem to make a difference how wet or dry my soil was.

It bent a little bit on the first use. Granted it was slightly rocky soil but I expected it to be a little tougher.

Great tool for wetland delineations. The grips are nice and the step is very helpful for pushing it into the soil.

The metal quality is very poor. It may work in the mid west but the heavy clay soil here in Appalachia is too hard on it. I used it on two feilds and bent.
