Relationships are key !
De Haan takes an approach rooted in psychotherapy, but applied to executive coaching, with remarkably well researched insights into how certain critical moments can transform coaching relationships.

Academic view of coaching, not an easy read
Unfortunately this book was a bit of a borefest for me. It reads like an academic paper and is very hard to engage with. There's lots of research, methodologies, stats and assumptions drawn all that point to the conclusion that coaching is about good relationships and it doesn't matter what method or intervention you use. I found myself reading the intro and then skipping to the conclusion at the end of each chapter to get through the book as quickly as possible while taking in the essence of the message. There are some saving moments in the appendix where you get to read about critical moments that other coaches have experienced in their practice. This content laid out in a more engaging and personal way would have made a much better book in my opinion. If you're studying coaching and need to write academic essays then this book will be useful for references and quotes. I certainly found Effective Modern Coaching by Myles Downey and the Coaches Casebook by Kim Morgan a much better read overall.
