I own several SAK as well as Leatherman products. This one is the sweet spot for pocket carry. Perfect tool selection without getting too bulky and scissors are out of this world. Add a layer and it would start getting too bulky and what’s there will take care of 90% plus of daily problems that you come across. Alox scales blow plastic handles away. If you have this in your pocket most people will be set and if in an office or urban setting you won’t freak anyone out. If you need more than this then it’s time to start thinking Leatherman. This thing is always there in your pocket perfection.

I really like this version. The blade is a little thicker and sturdier than regular SAK's. The scissors are excellent. I don't carry this one a lot due to no toothpick or tweezers, but I do find I carry it around the house. It's great to have in your pocket on those weekend days when you're working around the house and doing lots of various chores. It comes in handy. If this is the only SAK you are going to own, I would get a more traditional model with the scale tools, but as an addition to your collection, this is a nice one to have.

The Pioneer X Alox gets wonderful reviews. I love my SAK Compact, and wanted to get one for a friend, but I thought the Alox scales of the Pioneer might suit him a little better. When I compared the two knives, I had to go with the Compact simply because having only two layers makes it a little thinner and a little lighter. And I also like that the Compact has space in the scales for a few more tools - the "toothpick", tweezers, and pen.That said, if you don't need those tools and don't mind a slightly heavier knife, the Pioneer is a gorgeous knife with a lot of usefulness. It has both the traditional bottle- and can-opener with their flat-bladed screwdriver ends. Having the awl hinged on the end makes it much more useful than the center-hinged awls on other models. The scissors are, of course, legendary.My only quibble with the usefulness of the actual knife is that it can be hard to access the scissors - the three layers of tools at different heights can hide the thumbnail slot or put it so far down into the knife handle that it's hard to reach. Granted, that might have been the case only with the specific knife I had, or maybe the problem is me and my thumbnails!

Update: the scissors are easy to get used to, even with your right hand.I got same day shipping, and to my amazement it arrived the same day! The package was factory sealed, and the knife was in perfect condition.I used to have the soldier model, so I had a pretty good idea what to expect. Still, it is amazing what you get for $40 - a solid, finished product that should last for years.This knife has some weight to it, and because of that, I don’t expect to run it through the washing machine as many times as my old (lost) soldier. It also fits better in the hand, and the scissors, though small, are of excellent quality. Learn to use your left hand to open them, and the action becomes natural.I considered the climber, cadet and the tinker before buying this one. I gave my son a one hand trekker, which is a great camp knife, but not something to carry every day. The climber and tinker had things I didn’t need and plastic scales, and the cadet seemed a little apologetic in size, but otherwise nice. The pioneer and the X are both sturdier than the other 3 smaller knives, but they’re all worthy of consideration.
