Complex and character filled rollercoaster.
I love this series, Arina Tanemura's art work is always beautiful and has a dreamlike quality that I love, however some of her work can be quite fluffy like i.o.n or mistress fortune. The Gentlemen's alliance however is something entirely different, and a rarity in a shojo as instead of the common love triangle or story that starts with a clear couple that you know will end up together eventually The gentlemen's alliance introduces you to a host of characters all with their own back stories and romantic entanglements and motives.Yes in the authors panels and character profiles she does give a bit away but it warns you at the start to read these after the manga and I find them a real insight into the mind of the author. The story gets really complicated in the 2nd book but I don't want a book I can read in five minutes, I want a page turner that keeps me guessing from start to finish and that's what this is.Gentlemen's alliance is fast paced and frantic but worth the journey.

Fnatstic artowrk an intricate plot! ^_^
I bought this on a whim and the second that I'd finished reading i went and ordered 2,3 and 4! it has a beautiful love story that only gets better and more intriguing as the manga progresses! Its a story about a girl called Haine who fell in love with Shizumasa upon reading a story book that he wrote as a child. The manga follows Haine as she is reunited with him and discovers that he has changed....I must admit that there were some slightly confusing bits but only because the story gets very twisty from volume 2 onwards! ^_^I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a good romantic comedy with lots of twists, turns and a beautifully romantic feel, you wont be disappointed!

Gentlemen's Alliance Cross vol.1
Story summary (from back of book)Haine has been in love with Shizumasa Togu since she read the fairy tale he wrote as a child. However, the Emperor is so well sequestered by the student council that she hasn't been able to speak to him in the three months she's been at the academy. And as rumor has it, he already has a lover...The artwork in this manga in generally pretty, with a romantic feel, but the story itself is very disappointing. The plot is difficult to follow and the flow of the story feels disjointed. The characters are lacking any real personality, and often seem to act in a contradictory way, from page to page. The author has included panels of character profiles, and comments on her thought process throughout the volume, which are not meant to be read until the end. Unfortunatly they are distracting and add to the confusing nature of the over-complicated artwork.Perhaps the story will improve with future volumes. But after reading The Gentlemen's Alliance Cross, I was left thinking, why did I bother?

Arina does it again.
Arina Tanemura has been one of my favorite mangaka ever since Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne. So, if you have ever read her work before, or are a following fan of her work then getting into this series is a no brainer. However, if you aren't one of those people... then what are you waiting for! The art for this manga is top notch, and the story is full of surprises even in the first volume. After reading the first chapter I was already wanting to know what was going to happen next. I guess the only thing I could mention against this manga is sometimes the dialogue seems hard to follow; I would have to reread sections to make sure I understood them, but the translators are pretty good about keeping you from getting completely lost, go Viz!Btw, I'm a 20 something dude, and I love this manga.

One of the best manga ever!!!!! (minor spoilers...)
The story starts out kinda boring, but over time, it got reeeeeaaaaaaaly interesting. Like the male protagonist pretend that he's gay, and the guy he's pretending to be gay with is actually in love with him,(Oh, uh, spoilers) Theres many action scenes as well. I also freaking love the fact that the main protaginst is a female,(Gender equlity for all!!!)She's in love with the male protagonist. She's also no pushover. If you try to hurt her boo or her, she'll lay the smack down on you.
