What's the difference between this and the S3U model?

The Expresso HD is the latest and greatest from Interactive Fitness. The name "Expresso HD" comes from the 23" High Definition widescreen display vs. the 19" on the S3. In addition to the massive screen, the HD bike has a next generation computer in it that is both more powerful and uses less than half the energy. With the new computer, the HD bike has double the frame rate of the older bike. This makes for a much smoother ride and significantly more responsive steering so that you can take the corners a lot tighter when you need to on tours like Redwood Dash and Expresso Speedway. Lastly, the new Dragon Fit update is only available on the HD bike. You can still play the original Proving Grounds level on the S3 but if you want the 9 new maps launched with the Dragon Fit update and/or any future updates then you will need the Expresso HD. Personally I love the new Dragon Fit update, but even when I'm riding on the road the HD is miles better than the S3. After the HD came out, for a while I continued to ride the S3 because I was used to it but I recently switched to the HD as part of a challenge in our office and I can't go back. The HD is so much more immersive. The S3 just feels small by comparison.

Do i need a subscription to use this bike? If i buy used, can i still access all tracks?

Basically no it comes with a few pre program rides.  To go further in your training you will need to buy a subscription which is $200.00 a year and to access locked rides you need to build up your riding points. So, if you want all the tracks, you have to buy the program.

Are the courses accompanied by appropriate sounds?

I use the machines a lot and love the variety of courses. Mainly I like the scenery and passing other riders.and keeping up with my own ghost from a previous ride.No sounds at all ..
