I mounted a Samsung 860 into its pop-out cage … and it's a perfect fit. You drop the SSD onto two 'permanent' screws in the cage that act as post-mounts to hold the SSD in place without actually permanently mounting the SSD TO the cage. Making it easy/quick to swap SSDs in/out of the cage. (Or IcyDock sells additional cages separately.) OR you can screw-in the SSD using the remaining two screw-holes to more-permanently mount it into the cage. (Screws provided.) The 'cage-holder' mounts into a 3.5" external front bay slot with the three screw-holes on each side in the correct standard position to do so. (Screws provided.) The back of the OUTSIDE of the cage-holder has the SATA power & data connections needed to make the permanent connections. And the cage itself slides in snug so that the SSD connects to the SATA connectors mounted on the back of the INSIDE of the cage-holder. This device is really intended for hot-swapping … but I am just using it as a bracket for my SSD boot drive. I didn't really have anywhere else to bracket it up … and I had a 3.5" external slot free. The cage has a built-in blue light that will flicker to indicate SSD activity, a nice plus that I wouldn't get had I bracketed-up the SSD somewhere internally. Another nice feature is that the cage and cage-holder are flush with the external bay opening. This is the only product of this type I found with that feature. I needed that feature because I have a door that swings open/closed over the external bay slots. Accordingly competing devices, where the drive, cage and/or cage-holder protrude, could not be used as a solution. If you are going to use this device for hot-swapping, there is a TWO-cage version of this device available that might interest you even more. I only had ONE unused SATA port left on the motherboard, so I just went with this one-cage version instead. Appears to be solid & thoughtful construction … and an excellent choice for these types of applications.

I open the side of a desktop and hook these directly to the SATA and power cables without having to bolt in for temporary data transfer. Would be nice if it came with an adapter for 5 1/4 bay. Much better than the DVD replacement HDD holder.

Pulling out the tray works fine, as well as replacing the drive inside the tray. However, inserting the tray into the bay is more of a hassle. I guess it is useful for occasional use, but I fear it might break if used on a more frequent basis
