I use the Shapton diamond truing stone.

What is the lap stone used for?

The lapping stone is used for flattening the stone. And the reason we flatten the stone is in pursuit of the perfect edge. So it is not 100% needed. You can use sandpaper and a piece of flat granit tile but it is more of a pain and the cost of sand paper does add up.
