Bizet: The Pearl Fishers

This is the original 1863 version which I prefer. Unlike Carmen, this work has beautiful melodious music. Vanzo's rendition of Je Crois Entendre is great, his high notes are crisp and in tune. Both Vanzo and Sarabia put there all into the famous duet, Au fond du temple saint. Even though this performance was recorded in 1978, the digital re-master is excellent. I would highly recommend this recording.

An absolutely wonderful recording. The sound, conducting, singing, and orchestra are great! The price is unbelievably reasonable! Of course, it would be nice to have a libretto, but at this price it is hard to complain.

** Be warned that if you are buying this for the famous Act I duet "Au fond du temple saint" then you may be disappointed. This is the original 1863 version with an attenuated version of that great duet. **This caveat aside Ileana Cotrubas is in good voice as Leila and Alain Vanzo is also OK as Nadir. The conducting from George Pretre is merely pedestrian but the choruses come across quite well.This is probably the best available version of "The Pearl Fishers", but we still await a really good version of this great Bizet opera.

Perfect for listening to on long journeys

This is a beautiful opera and I have enjoyed listening to it. The CD came very quickly (the next day) I was amazed at the speed.

A wonderful production, masterfully recorded and a joy to own. The (many) duets are exquisitely beautiful. With or without a full comprehension of the French language it is a joy to listen to.

This is a wonderful recording of a wonderful opera. The soloists are really good and I find myself listening to it over and over again.
