Using this for a home made fire pit. Is there any reason cannot use as a cooking grate because it looks really sturdy?

It's generally used as the bottom grate in a Weber kettle grill ( what you would put coals on). But if it's still clean I think it would work.

I have a green weber and -the lower half (cooking part that has the bottom sweeper (the bottom sweeper is shot) and would like to replace either whole bottom partand or/if possible the sweeper part-is this poossible?- I think I have the 22 inch model -it has the cart with tray on side

My grill doesn't have a sweeper or side shelf. It's just an old style basic charcoal grill. I looked at Weber's website however & looks like you can buy sweeper by itself. They also show 2 different charcoal grate sizes, 18" & 22 1/2". If you do have the 22" grill this grate in 22.5 should work. The sweeper is called one touch cleaning system & it comes in 2 sizes, too. Hope that helps.

Is the diameter of the 22.5 inch actually 17"? i'm looking for a 22" bottom grate to place inside a converted 55 gal drum for bbq'ing.

The diameter is 17 inches. It fits near the bottom of the kettle of the 22.5 inch grill.

Is this thicker than the original coal grates for a webber AA?
