It appeared to be dull and unfinished
Although it was advertised as Red Cedar, I believe what I got was something that was another blonde colored wood, with no oil finish on it. It appeared to be dull and unfinished. So I put four coats of tung oil on it and I now have a nice shiny blonde wood flute which sounds great and was at a great price, with exceptional value for the money. I really wanted a darker colored flute than this one. This one is far too light colored to be anything close to the color of the red cedar one depicted in the picture. But it gets five stars for value and great sound for the money. No complaints. I just like darker colored wood than I got. A coat of finish on it for starters would have also been nice. This one looked dull and unfinished out of the box. BUT I LIKE IT FOR THE VALUE. FIVE STARS!!!, in spite of my color and finish comments. And . . . I never have been able to smell even a hint of cedar in this flute, despite other's comments about a great cedar aroma.

Good starter flute.
This is a good starter flute for those curious to try Native American flutes. I'll start with the pros: It smells amazing (cedar is one of my favorite smells) and is lightweight. It is very smooth and has some initial finishing wax on it. Some light research on how to care for your flute will help make it last. I also tend to like its minimalist design. Like all flutes of this style, the talisman is removable and the flute will only produce sound if it's placed correctly. Also, you can play every pitch in the F octave except G so it's almost fully chromatic There is some room for improvement in the overall quality, but I'm leaving my four star review because you get what you pay for. For starters, my particular flute is tricky with tuning. There is no way to play the Fm pentatonic scale by the holes alone. D flat has to be half holed, but it's actually not to hard to do. The flute sounds at a very sharp F (but not F#) when unfingered. But if you want true pitch usually you can adjust your embrochure or place a different fingering to find it. HOWEVER, given that folk instruments typically value pitch variance and micro-tones, this is excusable in my opinion. Some final critiques: The actual sound is not as rich as I'd hoped. I've found as sweet a tone as I can but it is still a little reedy. However, for personal use I really like it nonetheless. Also, the finish on the wood is minimal (wax doesn't last long and also isn't very protective) however this is okay because now I get to choose exactly what finish to put on it. Overall, this flute is quite pragmatic and a good buy for beginners. If you want designs, beads, glossy finish, and really pure sound you may have to pay for a higher quality instrument.
