Q: What’s that little plate on the side for?

The plate without holes is used for various purposes: 1. A layer when burning resins so ashes don't fall through. 2. For gently tea-lighting and warming your favourite oils. (don't over fill) 3. As a substitute if people lose their sieve.

Yes, the base can be used to hold a standard tea light candle and burn your resin charcoal free. As a tip, be sure to wrap the bottle plate with a little tin foil as it helps keep the brass plate lasting longer. When using the tea light candle you can adjust the censer to the flame as desired. Be sure to use a unscented candles if you want the rich scent of your resins to occupy your scenes exclusively. You always have the option of using the base to hold resins or other refillable incense pieces. Hope that helps, Enjoy :)

Q: Can you use this for cone incense also?

I have not used cone incense, but I’ve used charcoal discs for resin incense, which is much hotter. I am certain it will work fine.
