While AMERICAN MAH JONGG FOR EVERYONE is subtitled THE COMPLETE BEGINNER'S GUIDE, it is a handy reference for players of all skill levels. The book breaks down the game (and preparing for the game) into manageable chapters, with clear explanations and helpful illustrations. There are activities to practice to build up your skills bit by bit, and quizzes at the end of each chapter to test what you have learned. Swain and Salk's appendices of a practice card and mini tiles to cut up are a brilliant addition to the book allowing newbies the opportunity to practice the skills they learn before diving in to purchase a mah jongg set. (I love that they also refer you to their web page for a pdf of the appendices, so you don't need to cut up your book.)I am not a beginner player, but often teach others how to play. AMERICAN MAH JONGG FOR EVERYONE is one of the best books that I have read in its clarity about play. The group I play with includes several beginners and I was able to show them the book and refer to information about rules (especially about those Jokers) and their explanations were quite helpful. In fact, two people have already ordered their own copies.I enjoyed the G&T Time, which shared their nostalgia and love of the game, also bringing home the point that different groups often play in slightly different ways and it is okay to find what works best for you.I highly recommend this book for new players wanting to better understand the rules as well as for mavens who'd like a refresher or want a resource to help teach new players.
