Yeah, 12v power brick worked for me, at least for experimental stages, it'll need to have enough current (obviously) to run the motors. Current requirements also depends a bit on how your driver's are tuned and the motors your running.

Which grbl 0.9 is this shield support?the z spindle is swapped at middle of 0.9;1.7a stepper motor is currently not working after i calib vref to 0.75

This seems to work just fine with the grbl .9 at github. I'm using one of these in a drawingbot I built, but my Z is a servo and not a stepper. The XY steppers work just fine. Sorry, I could not be of more help.
