The description says trimmer and mat, but the reviews sound as if it does not come with the mat. Anyone who has recently ordered it know which it is?

It doesn’t come with the mat. You have to purchase it separately. The mat is $30-35.

I have an 8 year old that loves crafting, is it safe & easy for her to use with little assitance?

With a little assistance and a cutting mat for support... it shouldnt be a problem... Im sure she will love it

I bought this but I can't figure out how to make it cut or keep the blades out. Do I need other things to make it work?

You have to twist the knob to lock the blade out.

Does it require the magnetic mat? Can i use it without that item? Or would it wiggle around on my desk?

Hello. I have one of these and I never used a magnetic mat. you have to hold it firmly, and then you won't have any problems with it :)
