The Art of Noir: The Posters and Graphics from the Classic Era of Film Noir

Love movie poster art, so this book adds other pics to my book collection. Plus, never fail to watch Eddie on TCM on his Noir series. Seen most of the films he's shown, but he always manages to surprise with quite a few films I haven't seen. The real treat is listening to his commentary on the films. Just to damn knowledgeable, you can't believe the things he knows- at least, I can't. Just blows me away. This goes hand in hand with --Dark City: The Lost World of Film Noir-- which I also purchased. Both are Beautiful & Excellent! Love you, man!

I recently reviewed Alain Silver's FILM NOIR GRAPHICS in paperback in which I found excellent descriptions of American and foreign posters of films noirs. Then I re-discovered the hard bound Muller book, THE ART OF FILM NOIR which I bought from Amazon in 2002 for around $50 and I am so glad it is coming out in a Paperback edition. Muller's POV is more of a noir fan when you read his Table of Contents. But unlike Silver's smaller-sized paperback, his posters are huge reproductions of the best films of noir.I only wish my own publishers would have allowed me to sneak in one poster in the 3 film noir books I had written. Greenwood Press only let me use one still from my own collection for DOUBLE INDEMNITY in NOIR, NOW & THEN (2001). Scarecrow Press only wanted 2 stills for a front and back cover of two scenes from Hitchcock's PSYCHO for my paperback called NE0-NOIR (2005).McFarland Publising in North Carolina was much more agreeable when I wrote LATIN AMERICAN FILMS 1932-1994 for them which contained many stills and also a COLORFUL paperback cover from EL MARIACHI (2005). In my newest publication for McFarland, they let me use 30+ stills with a beautiful cover from Ulmer's DETOUR in my latest book entitled HOUSES OF NOIR:DARK VISIONS FROM 13 FILM STUDIOS, a paperback to be published 30 Sept. 2013.So certainly ORDER & BUY the paperback edition of Muller's THE ART OF FILM NOIR, whose hardbound is also thrilling to read and sumptuous to look at. Muller also runs the FILM NOIR FOUNDATION based in San Francisco and it is joy to get on their website to see trailers from nearly 100 films plus other noir goodies. Muller is a dedicated activist, archivist, and preserver of noir films. He makes life in this "bitter noir world" more fascinating for those of us who have lived and participated in the cinematic world of film noir. Hats off to Eddie MULLER!

A simply dazzling collection of more than 350 posters and lobby cards devoted to the history of film noir, assembled by the "Czar of Noir" Eddie Muller. A large scale book beautifully designed by Bernard Schleifer and a credit to the publisher, Overlook Duckworth. Generally when you think about film noir you think in black and white but this book is all in gorgeous color and though we've had a lot of poster and film noir books published in recent years, lovers of either or both, will not be able to resist this one. Each poster and film gets a capsule comment by the author and there are more detailed sections devoted to noir directors, writers, actors, themes and recently discovered gems. And one of the joys of this collection is the amount of graphic material gathered from around the world with a special chapter devoted to American noir advertising in foreign countries as well as an abundance of international posters throughout this nearly four hundred page tome. Once you pick up "The Art of Film Noir", you'll find it too engrossing to put aside.

Nice book for the coffee table if you like the Noir genre movies

The other reviewers have pretty much said it all. I am adding just two minor quibbles that led me to a four star rating. First, there are more foreign posters than I would have liked. And many of them duplicated the English language ones. Second, some films ere given large full page and sometimes two page spreads. Some of the greatest film noir films were represented by relatively small graphic images. For example, The Big Sleep. Other films not as highly regarded were given larger images. I still recommend this book. Also, poster collectprs should find it valuable for data on each poster.

The illustrations are beautifully reproduced and provide a great window to the wonderful hand painted illustrations of film poster art before the modern era.

I just had to get a copy of this after a friend showed it to me on a visit to his studio.This is a rather outsized book (just over 14"in height) so unless you have tall bookshelves, it's one for the coffee table.Packed with high-quality colour reproductions, this is one of the finest collections of Film Noir posters, lobby cards and promotional graphics in book form I've ever seen; the illustrations are large, many are full-page, even some fully double-page spreads and the breadth of material is impressive with many examples of world-wide poster graphics, some I should think, quite rare; 338 illustrations all-in.Texts are quite short, but usefully explanatory, the graphics are arranged under a variety of different headings, but it's most likely the visuals you'll want this for.An excellent volume - not just for the film buff, but for anyone looking for evocative and dramatic Noir graphic illustration work.

Nach der muller`schen Lektüre der DARK CITY kam ich nicht umhin, auch den Bildband haben zu müssen, wobei ich den Bildband eigentlich eher im Auge hatte, nur leider hatte dieser eine fünfwöchige Lieferfrist.Nun ist er also da - sehr groß und wuchtig, seeeeehr bunt, farbgewaltig und unglaublich interessant.Film-Noir-Freak und Spezialist Eddie Muller hat sich einmal mehr selbst übertroffen. Auf über 270 Seiten präsentiert er 338 Poster und Lobbycards Poster, graphisch absolut überragend aufbereitet, die er jeweils mit kurzen Infos abrundet. So finden sich kleine Lobbycards, mittlere und großformatige Poster bis hin zum doppelseitigen XXL-Format (da wird so manches Sammler-Herz sicherlich höher schlagen und das ein oder andere an evtl. noch vorhandene freie Plätze bannen). Dazu mehr Text als erwartet, neben einer Einleitung/Vorwort beginnt jedes der Kapitel mit einem kurzen Überblick bzw. je nach Themengebiet findet sich auch Text im Kapitelverlauf.Thematisch hat er das Ganze einmal mehr sehr interessant und ansprechend gegliedert, aufbereitet und dargestellt. In sechs Kapiteln entführt er uns in eine längst vergangene Welt. Eine, die wir von der Silver Screen in monochromen Schwarz-Weiß-Abstufungen kennen, die sich hier jedoch sehr farbenfroh und überwältigend präsentiert. Film Noir ist eben viel mehr als Schwarz-Weiß.Es beginnt mit einer Einleitung, die in den Bann einer längst vergangenen, aber keineswegs vergessenen Welt entführt: "Artistically, noir was a movement that washed over Hollywood like a black tide at the end of Second World War. It paired the deeply shadowed, expressionistic visions of expatriate European directors with the cynical, hardboied school of American Fiction." (S. 6)Im ersten Kapitel werden wir mit dem NOIR-Style vertraut gemacht: Über 20th Century, Paramount, Metro, RKO, bis hin zu Eagle-Lion wird die Geschichte des NOIR-Posters vermittelt. So nahm beispielsweise Zukor poster art schon sehr früh sehr ernst und erkannte den unschätzbaren Wert des Filmposters bereits 1926.Es folgt ein weltweiter Siegeszug des Film NOIR - wir begleiten den Film auf seiner Reise um die Welt. Wie begegnen extrem farbenfrohen Postern aus Belgien, Postern aus Italien (bekannt für seine riesigen due- und quatre-folios), einigen aus deutschen Landen: Hier das sensationelle "dunkel papier", das dem Film Noir eine düstere, expressionistische Note gibt, einen "reckless style"."Noir is the dream turned nightmare" - die Elemente, das Essentielle des Genres werden thematisiert. Selbstverständlich anschaulich -und einmal mehr bildgewaltig- unterlegt durch diverse Filmbeispiele. Besonders interessant: The Red Tide, der antikommunistische Film Noir.Endlich begegnen wir den altbekannten und unvergesslichen Gesichtern der schwarzen Serie. An welche denken Sie zuerst?Richtig, allem voran Bogie, Conte (wohl nicht zwangsläufig, aber da chronologisch geordnet und deswegen schon an zweiter Stelle); Duryea, dem sadistic dandy - the busy boy with a mean backhand; gefolgt von Garfield, Lancaster und Mitchum. Nicht zu vergessen, den von mir sehr geschätzten Robert Ryan. Ladies second, last but not least folgen Crawford, Grahame, Lupino, Savage, Scott, Missy, Totter, Trevor und Windsor - what about Joan Bennett?! bzgl. der Auswahl der Damen bin ich nicht sonderlich glücklichDoch was wären all die illustren Gesichter ohne das Grundlegende, die Story dahinter. Deswegen an dieser Stelle klanghaften Namen wie Hammett, Cain und Chandler. Darüber hinaus Woolrich (by the way, das CHASE-Plakat ist zum Gruseln, Cummings und Morgan sehen wahrhaft aus wie Zombies!), als auch Burnett, Fisher, Boehm, Rouse.Wer sich wie ich nun fragt, what about Lang, Preminger & Co, der wird zum Ende mit (Lieblings)Regisseuren belohnt. Über A wie Alton bis Welles - einfach selbst sehen und lesen!Nach eifrigem Blättern, fasziniertem Betrachten und eifrigem Lesen ist man nun leider am unvermeidlichen Ende angelangt. Zum Schluss findet man noch ein Inhaltsverzeichnis der vorhandenen Filme zum Poster.Ein Bildband, der einfach nur überwältigt und begeistert. Äußerst hochwertig, exzellent layoutet und graphisch 1-A umgesetzt. Meine Plakat-Favoriten: Nightmare Alley, THE SCAR, das XXL ANGEL FACE, Woman in the Window und Mildred Pierce. Was THE MAN I LOVE in einem Noir-Buch zu suchen hat ist mir zwar nicht ganz ersichtlich, aber Muller ist wohl ein großer Lupino-Fan (davon soll es ja durchaus einige geben, auch wenn sie dünn gesät sind!)Ein visuelles Beweis wie atmosphärisch und stylish der Film Noir war und ist. Darüber hinaus dynamisch und großartig, pures Technicolor, im Gegensatz zum filmischen 'chiaroscuro tone', zwar weniger monochrom als bei Betrachtung der Film Noirs erwartet, aber noch viel überwältigender als gedachtFrei nach dem Motto: femme fatale meets antiheroFAZIT: GENIALES Bilderwerk, jedem Noir-Liebhaber wärmstens ans Herz gelegt.Marriage of Sex & Violence, dynamisch, verführerisch, zeitlos und grandios - genauso wie die Filme, zu deren Promotion-Zwecken sie kreiert wurden.Ideale Ergänzung zu Steinbauer-Grötschs  Die lange Nacht der Schatten.
