The .7 seems to be the best pencil; can you use .5 lead in the .7 pencil?

No, it is not possible. The .7 clamp infact can not works with the .5 lead because these is too smaller for it.

is this very durable?

It is more durable than a pencil with a non-retractable lead sleeve (at the tip); however, the inner part where the barrel screws on to the rest of the body is plastic. For the money, you might be better off buying the Zebra M-701 Mechanical Pencil, 0.7mm (if you are specifically interested in the 0.7mm lead diameter). By the time you break five of those you will be about even with what one of these costs.

Which pencil lead is the finest line the .05 or the .07?

of course .3 is a common pencil lead size and allows for the most thing/fine lines, however I am not aware of rotoring pencils in this diameter.
