Hello to all reading this. The reason I decided on the MikroTik Cloud Core Router CCR1009-7G-1C-1S+ is that it had the features and capabilities that I wanted. • I flipped when I saw what Cisco systems was charging for the same things in their Routers and Switches. I like Cisco but man I would like to be able to afford to eat and do other things too. Another factor besides the Cisco-like features this device supports is support for over a 1-Gigabit connection. I have a Motorola 8600 cable modem that will do aggregate 6 Gigabit IF the service provided that or I go direct fiber I'm covered either way the MikroTik is fiber ready with 10Gbps SFP and handles 1 Gigabit coper on the wan side - no bottle necks. ♦ SFP fiber module not included in package but not being Cisco you avoid that premium you'd get slapped with so a bonus. • Another score - OS Upgrades are free, unlike Cisco you don't have to have a service contract to upgrade your router image. ☼ I even was floored to find mine was tier-6 activated for lifetime- All the features are enabled, NO subscriptions or buy-ups needed and straight out of the box that way and still is. I did see "Purchasing a license for RouterOS" on their page but my device appears to have it all enabled for the now seemingly steal of a price under a half a grand. ☼ Looks can be deceiving for the face panel, it is something across plastic and carbon fiber light but apparently strong, perhaps a carbon fiber printed. I had no problems putting the included rack ears on and mounting it. Device is incased in metal case but was light and easy to maneuver to mount. • The front panel does have a functional 2x2 inch backlit black and grey/white LCD touch screen, and yes, you can read it, touch it and scroll with it. The LCD face is not glass but a thick transparency plexiglass like plastic, it is responsive and informative able to swipe up down left and right in and out of menus. • The internal router UI is great and offers access to tons of capabilities. ☼ I would NOT recommend this for a home novice unless you are willing to learn, while you can plug and play with minimal settings but there is so much more to it. I you are an IT professional , computer Geek, do or like networking and or just like learning this is right up your alley, it's fun and challenging for me. As stated , do your homework and study about your new device, the RouterOS is a bit different from the run of the mill op-sys interfaces we all know from ASUS, Netgear, Linksys and TP-link, it lets you configure many many things and even will run scripts like the modern Cisco Routers/Switches. Regarding firewall, it has robust features: • DO take time to learn how to set it to protect you. • Monitoring on this thing has a very attentive ear and will log anything attempting to come into it and administer it telling you their IP and what they tried to use to login with whether successful or not. • You have 5 ways to connect to this device to admin it, • SSH, Internet/Web GUI WAN/LAN http/https 80/433 (SSL), 9-pin serial , usb-C and WinBox • Strongly suggest turning off SSH & WinBox management on router & block external management. • DEFINATELY create another admin account that doesn't have the word admin in and set it's password and test - if OK then change the the default admin password to something strongly secure and down that admin account - You will see why if you look in the logs due to the trolls on the internet. This router is good and will show you things lurking outside your internet door at your modem/ONT also any thing that got past the modem and is attempting to fiddle around with the router. MikroTik has an extensive and impressive document library for their devices and a large following in the forum, utilize them and you can go far and do things quickly on configs, firewall rules and getting answers. There are some counties you may want to GeoFence in the firewall per region instead of by IP Russia, China, Philippines, Vietnam and Brazil as it is more efficient that doing a line of IP#. I have not once had to call or e-mail tech support for help and I have had zero issues with the equipment - It boots/reboots very fast and same can be said for it acquisition of external IP addresses for WAN and it's DHCP server is efficient and reliable. CPUs have NEVER bogged down and device is always available and responsive. I ventured out for some creative exploration and was able to generate self-signed certs on the router and export them for OPENVPN usage and after about an hour of learning the ropes was able to spin up the VPN server, IP pool as well as setup a Windows10 pc to use VPN using 4096 bit encryption and it worked very nicely ( bit encryption is fully customizable as is most everything else and then somethings I haven't explored ) MFG's Product info: https://www.msdist.co.uk/mikrotik/cloud-core-routers/ccr1009-7g-1c-1splus#Product-Details Demo you can log into to test drive the interface on the routers: https://mikrotik.com/software
