Can you adjust the chimes so they only ring on the hour, not every 15 minutes?

Yes, take the battery out and reinsert it on any time expect the 15’s meaning put the battery in at 10 of the hour etc the chime should stop on the 15, 30, 45 - it will still chime on the hours

Is this clock made in Japan?

Clock does not say was it was made. The manual does not say where it is made. Seiko is a Japanese company so its made there or made with there supervision. This clock works great .

does anyone know what kind of wood its made of , it just says wood ?

I don't know what kind of wood it is. I looked at the description and on the box but no information. You can probably find it by contacting Seiko directly. I have had the clock for some time. It has kept perfect time and is heavy. The wood is beautiful. The picture of the color is accurate

Does it make a ticking sound

There is no clicking sound on the clock it is very quiet and you can adjust the chime volume. Also it does not chime between 11pm and 6 am. It's a very nice clock.
