is it left handed as pictured

Yes. There are left-handed and right-handed levers.

In case of fire does this automatically unlock when you turn the inside handle so you can leave?

The inside lock is a small turn knob. Easy to turn without force. This is the best lockset for our sturdy fire retardant door that we've ever purchased.

It sounds like the outside is a key lock and the inside is just a twist lock? So I can lock the handle without a key on the inside?

Correct! Thumb latch on the inside. Keyed lock on the outside.
