Heartbreaking and hopeful...Masterful storytelling...
After reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, I had high expectations from his work. I always wanted to read his works and always for some reason never got around to it. When I in India for our mini-vacation I asked my brother to order quite a lot of books from Amazon India. These were on the list and I was really happy with my purchase and the delivery as well. As I was reading this book, I realized that this is not from just one person's point of view, but the story is told from several other character's POV as well. I wasn't really expecting it and after the initial surprise had worn off, I really got pulled into the story of Abdullah and Pari. Because the story is told from different perspectives and different timelines as well, the depth of heartbreak was a lot less compared to The Kite Runner for me personally. It's not that the story didn't grip me or wreak havoc on my emotions, it was just the opposite, but I found myself being pulled into another world and another story before I could drown in the emotions the story made me feel. The way all these stories are so wonderfully woven together forming a beautiful, unforgettable reading experience is just amazing. The interconnecting storylines bring us more clarity of events and the motivations of these characters as well. Overall it's a story of love, family-bonds, life-journeys, and heartbreak. It's masterfully written and captures the hearts of readers and tugs their heartstrings effortlessly. This book is a great work on human behavior, characters whose actions and voices cause ripples that will carry from the past to the future. It's very well written and has a lasting effect on the reader as well. I absolutely loved this book and would highly recommend checking it out. I gave it 5 stars.

Beautiful Piece of Work
If you are interested in Historical fiction and specifically Afghan History then Khaled Hosseini is your go-to writer. I have read all of his books and learned so much about Afghan, history, heritage, and culture. The mountain echoed is another engaging book of Hosseini that envelopes both past and present simultaneously. A heart-wrenching family tale of the lost one and how it is important for a human being to know their true roots for the purpose of self Actualization.

It is sometimes difficult to let ourselves be carried along by a story if the cultural codes are not familiar to us. Khaled Hosseini takes us with him on a journey through the ways of other people, and convinces us of the authenticity of his story. The pictures he paints through his written word remain and come back long after the book has been read. Yet here lie both the strong and weak points of this tale: where does the individual story end and the history of a country begin? I recommend this book without hesitation - whats more it arrives promptly in your letterbox and, thanks to the care taken by the people responsible for its transit, in perfect condition.

53 years later...
Summary: Pari and Abdullah are as close as siblings can be. Abdullah loves his sister so much, she is almost his daughter. So when the powers that be tear them apart, both of their lives are irrevocably changed. Years down the road we meet friends, doctors, chauffeurs, people whose lives are changed through this one event. What unfolds is a story that crosses oceans, teaching us what it means to love and care. Review: Another hit from Khaled Hosseini! Truly, this man knows how to weave a story. And the Mountains Echoed is a less brutal novel than Kite Runner or A Thousand Splendid Suns, but the story is no less meaningful nor less heartbreaking. Each chapter is written from the POV from a different character, and one chapter actually has two different POVs intertwined. Each POV is a different character's journey, but they are all related to each other. Unlike the other two novels, this book does not center around regional conflicts. Hosseini delicately tells us stories of individuals who are going through real life journeys. They love, they die. They acquire dream jobs, and real life illnesses. The story is about individuals and how they relate to one another. Sure, the Taliban and the Russians are mentioned but only as a part of the setting. And since the story takes place in four different countries, we see a vast array of settings that help give more richness to the story. One of the major themes of this novel is appearance vs. reality. The beautiful are empty, the morally repugnant are heroes. What may seem like a good idea at the time is actually the worst idea. The characters are also morally ambiguous, much like the main character in Kite Runner. One of the strength's of Hosseini is he sneaks characters into our hearts so that we may begin to understand their bad and ugly choices. You cannot hate the characters because they are only human. Hosseini does a fantastic job creating unique voices for each of the POVs. Dare I say, even better than GRRM? The storytelling style even changes, from how a father tells his son a bedtime story, to how a woman gives an interview. It's quite remarkable. One little issue I had was Idris' chapter. Although touching, it had little to do with the larger story. Even Markos' chapter fit. But Idris' chapter wasn't quite like the rest; it fit lyrically, but not contextually. I cannot say more without giving the plot away. We already know Hosseini knows how to tell a story. But he has surprised us yet again by showing us that not only can he write one story, but he can create a novel quilted from the stories of nine different characters. Of course, my recommendation is READ! Sex:N/A Violence: None, although mentioned peripherally. Rating: 5 out of 5 stars Quote: Beauty is an enormous, unmerited gift given randomly, stupidly.
