Absolutely the BEST Fencing Exercises Book of many out there
I reviewed weight training for fencing ( The Ultimate Guide to Weight Training for Fencing (Ultimate Guide to Weight Training: Fencing) ), which is excellent for the weight aspect, but Barth's book is the ULTIMATE guide to all the aspects specific to fencing, from strength to flexibility and endurance, as well as very specific techniques. The companion volume -- Learning Fencing -- also is extraordinary, with numerous fun and easy to understand illustrations for both kids and adults, as well as serious trainers. The books chapters include: A brief history, an interview with world champion Claudia Bokel, Training techniques, Conditioning, Specific techniques, Tactics, Competitive skills, Moves and positions, Electronic scoring, and lots of advice on sportsmanship and even sore muscles!I teach both blade combat and fencing, and every student and parent gets a copy of this book-- great for both beginners and seasoned coaches. There are lots of specialty books about history, stories, dueling, etc. but this one stands out as PRACTICAL for both the serious competitor and hobbyist. The two teachers (Berndt and wife Katrin) are seasoned German team teachers, and their compassion and "psychological know how" really shine forth here. I know, they aren't French or Italian (or lately Russian or American!) but truly gifted coaches transcend nationality, as do excellent text writers!

Very good for beginner fencers in their early teens
Very good introduction to how to learn to fence. As a complex sport with many elements, a learner can be overwhelmed by the 'firehose' of detail and information that a coach tries to regulate in the early stages of teaching a beginner. I have lent a copy of this to some of my students, some buy their own copy. Nearly all seem to find it helpful. It explains in very simple language how to learn to fence, how to practice, what to expect as you get better. The target audience is nominally early teens, my students are adults and absorb the contents quickly (usually at a single reading). It would probably be a very good purchase for any beginner in that age group (11-16), it will help them to train effectively and they will make better progress, understand why they get better and what may be causing problems in their improvement to help them become more self reliant.

Five Stars
Definitely designed for the young fencer but still a great addition for any fencer of any age.

the book does a good job explaining why these aspects of training is important
Training Fencing fills a niche topic most other fencing books have left out. The book begins with and introduction to the history of fencing and leads to an interview of an olympic gold medalist, listing her reasons for loving the sport. In short, the book does a good job explaining why these aspects of training is important. Although not mentioned, it touches cross-training. Since this is a translation from a German source, I would hope a fencing book would be avaialable that mentions Long Term Athletic Development that's popular in the UK and Canada.. As said, this book defines and explains important fencing topics for young fencers, also helpful for beginning adult fencers as well
