Considering its fom of application, wouldn't these pads be contacting the surface, being they are a stick-on? Should only contact when pressed.

They are a bubble thing and the glue part does not conduct or close the contacts on the circuit board. The contact is made only when the bubble black thing which does conduct is pushed by you pushing the button you want on your remote completing the circuit board contact pads. They work very well for me. They do wear out and quit working just like the original ones did but last a long time. I have purchased them twice now to keep all my remotes working. They work good, but be careful installing them don't get the black conducting part overlapping to other contact pads on the board that are sometimes very close. (Size pad is important) If you do the results may not be what you want or may not work at all. Pick the right size to cover only the contacts you need and be careful installing and they do work.
