Domestic size and weight limitations for most airlines are a maximum of 62" when you add total height (including wheels), width, and depth.  Also a maximum weight of 50 pounds.  All airlines will surcharge for oversize bags when this exceeded.  This specific bag must be checked and is never approved for carry on.

Southwest, specifically, has a 2 free checked bags policy as long as you comply with the above limitations.

Most, if not all, other airlines charge for all checked bags unless you are a priority rwards member or using their branded credit card.  As an example, I am a million miler/Silver Medallion level with Delta.  This gets me one free checked bag, second bag is the normal $35.

Bag fees with other airlines usually start at $25 for the first bag, $35 for the second bag.  Third bag and higher can be in the hundreds of dollars.

Baggage fees and limitations can vary greatly from one airline to another and between destinations.  Also, based upon you frequent flier status with that airline and whether or not you have an airline branded credit card for the line you're flying.  ALWAYS check your specific airlines policy before booking travel.
