What is the total height of the medium filter with the pipe fully retracted? My tank is only 9" tall.

It’s pretty tall but I managed to use it in my 10 gallon. Hope that helps

would it need an air pump as well or is ok as is?

Works fine without an air pump. It just doesn't perform the same level of surface agitation without an air pump, even if the outlet is put right at the surface.

I just had this deliver yesterday, but it did not include the ceramic bio balls. Should it have included these?

I did not get the ceramic bio balls either
