When James Gurney's Dinotopia: A Land Apart from Time first appeared in 1992, it was immediately hailed as a fully imagined world of the caliber of J. R. R. Tolkien's. Gurney's premise — of an undiscovered island where a race of mystical humans co-exists in harmony with intelligent dinosaurs — has been since reiterated over and over in numerous films and by scores of other writers. Now, Calla Editions brings Gurney's spectacular artistry to a new generation in this 20th anniversary edition. Digitally re-rendered from the original transparencies, Gurney's dramatic panoramas of Dinotopia and close-up character studies of its inhabitants — both human and saurian — take on new vitality. And as a tale of high adventure and discovery told as entries and sketches in journal form, Dinotopia presents a shipwrecked visitor's glimpse into an imagined social order, a culture, and even a cooperative interspecies technology that will satisfy lovers of fantasy and science fiction of all persuasions. This edition includes a new Afterword written by author James Gurney as well as a special section of behind-the-scenes studies and maquettes he used in developing his paintings. Review: Carrying on the tradition - I recently read Dinotopia to my child and it was such a magical experience. I loved the book when I was a kid and it was so much fun to share it with my daughter. The book is set on a fictional island where humans and dinosaurs live together in peace. There are all sorts of different dinosaurs, from brontosauruses to velociraptors. The humans have adapted to live in this world, building cities and bridges that are accessible to both humans and dinosaurs. My daughter was fascinated by the book. He loved learning about all the different dinosaurs and the way the humans and dinosaurs lived together. He also loved the illustrations, which are really beautiful. Reading Dinotopia to my son brought back so many memories of my mom reading it to me when I was little. I loved the feeling of being transported to another world and I'm so glad that I could share that experience with my own kid. I highly recommend Dinotopia to anyone who is looking for a fun and imaginative book to read to their child. It's a great way to spark their imagination and introduce them to the world of dinosaurs." In my opinion: It's a great way to teach children about dinosaurs in a fun and engaging way. It's a positive and uplifting story about friendship, cooperation, and respect for nature. The illustrations are beautiful and really bring the story to life. It's a great way to bond with your child and share a love of reading. If you're looking for a great book to read to your child, I highly recommend Dinotopia. It's a classic for a reason! Review: A book that stands the test of time - I purchased the 20th anniversary edition of one of my childhood favorites for my nephew who is graduating elementary school (going into 5th grade). I was worried this series might be too young for him, but the new edition is full of more detailed fascinating information that gives a child room to grow. He recently became interested and Dungeons and Dragons & has always loved creating art, so I’m hoping the detailed illustrations in this book encourages his own art style to grow and evolve. The illustrator of Dinotopia has published multiple drawing & painting books which I also plan to get for my nephew when he’s a little older. This series stands the test of time, appropriate for bridging the gap from childhood to adulthood, great for all ages.

Beautiful book series
I didn’t read this series when I was a kid but stumbled upon it while looking for books about dinosaurs for my dinosaur-obsessed four year old. I wanted to find something less “scientific” or aggressive and scary than the other dinosaur content that is out there, and these books are so incredible for that purpose. So much imagination and obvious care went into writing them and creating this artwork! This book is written in the style of a diary which I think was a little hard for my preschooler to follow. However I bought the second book and it is told in the third person like a more traditional children’s story. We have yet to read the third and fourth books in the series but I will definitely be ordering them after some time has passed and we have thoroughly enjoyed the first two.

Beautiful illustrations and fantastic story- an outstanding gift for all ages!
This is such a beautifully-illustrated book and a wonderful story! Makes an outstanding, unique gift for any dinosaur-loving child. I discovered it in a small bookstore when I was in college (a while ago...). Over the years, I have often given this book as a gift. I gave one to a young boy who hated to read and struggled with it (C), and to an extremely intelligent boy who loved to read (H)-- both loved dinosaurs and both loved the book! The boy who loved to read also knew more about dinosaurs at the age of 5 than I will ever know in my lifetime-- he's very scientific, knows all of the different time periods, sizes, characteristics, and technical names of, I think, every dinosaur ever! The level of details in this story met even his stringent standards of scientific accuracy! It says ages 8-12, but I gave it to the boys when they were much younger (5-6). James Gurney (author and illustrator) was an illustrator for National Geographic. His illustrations are so beautiful, children can look at those even if they can't yet read all of the words, then grow into the book. This really makes a wonderful and unique gift- I keep giving it and it is a success with both the children and their parents. And the 20th Anniversary Edition is really special!

Wonderful Book, Great Service
I first read Dinotopia many years ago. I don't remember what happened to the copy I had, but for a long time now I have wished to own a copy and enjoy this wondrous book all over again. The enchanting story, the incredible illustrations, truly do remind me of the works of J. R. R. Tolkien. I understand the saga of the secret island of humans and intelligent dinosaurs has been continued in a series of sequels, which I will probably acquire and read, too. The copy I purchased is hardback, a 20th anniversary Calla edition in like-new condition--a real work of art--and sold to me by the Friends of the Mountain View Public Library, a non-profit. Their service is excellent--the book arrived carefully packaged and arrived sooner than I expected. Many thanks!

Timeless
I purchased this product as a gift for my friend's 10yo daughter who recently has been been into dinosaurs after watching Jurassic Park: Camp Cretaceous. I originally got this book when I was around 12 years old, and remember being obsessed by it to the point I was convinced Denison's journal was real and that there was an island of dinosaurs somewhere in the ocean. In high school, my mother bought me prints of three of Gurney's two-page scenes featured in the book. Of the three picture books in the series, this one is the best. The second book is also decent and worth a read, but gets a little more fantastical (for a series about talking dinosaurs living with humans). The third book is optional.

Very nice
First time reading it, been wanting to get back into reading in a while, the book series I was reading before… wasn’t really written well but after reading online, and seeing the art and some of the story I had to see it for my self. Boy was it a good purchase. I haven’t made much progress into it but I plan on reading this more it definitely is worth my time!

One of the coolest books I've ever read
One of the coolest books I've ever read. The illustrations are incredible and there's so much to the story. I'm surprised I managed to make it to adulthood without having known about this. It seems like something teachers should've had in schools to help teach about various dinosaurs and to encourage creativity. The book itself is also really good quality with a hard cover and a good thickness of each page. I think anyone who likes dinosaurs would love this, especially young boys (since most are obsessed with dinosaurs anyway).

Dinotopia
Good book. Good story and pics. Daughters 11. Reads well but is a big story. Good to read together especially if u have a younger child as well. First bought this book in the 1990 or so when visiting Tyrell museum outside Calgary Alberta. Drumheller Alberta. Loaned it to someone and never got it back. So bought another copy. Good for kids who like Dino’s.
