The Start of a Definitive Run (Review #573)
Ed Brubaker's award winning run on Captain America stands out as one of my earliest comic book memories. The individual volumes for most of the series were available at my local library, foremost among them the first two volumes which collected the Winter Soldier storyline which starts off this omnibus. To me, this is the definitive version of Steve Rogers.Brubaker embraced everything about the character, including especially his time in World War II, and contextualized it against a modern setting, showing us what had changed about the world since then, and what hadn't.There is a real maturity to the story, a groundedness, even when dealing with characters who have abilities far beyond those of ordinary people. The series is steeped with espionage drama, delving into the gray areas of the world these characters inhabit. Brubaker writes Cap as a real veteran, using his time in war to show how those experiences shape his actions in the present day. That being said, I will admit that reading these stories again years later it does take a few issues to find that voice I described but once Brubaker does he never lets up on the intrigue and action he set up from the very beginning. The introduction of the Winter Soldier, a character whose story most will now be familiar with thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was one of the biggest shakeups to Cap's world in years. That's not even where the big moments end.If I recall correctly, the moment this collection ends on was a really big deal when it happened. I won't reveal what that was for those that don't know because it will be a surprise to new readers while fans who already know can appreciate it for what it was. Meanwhile the artwork which accompanies the story is some of the best in the business.Steve Epting once again proves himself a master talent after seeing his work in the Avengers: The Gathering omnibus. He is the primary artist for this volume, drawing almost every consecutive issue of this series as he did in the aforementioned omnibus. Epting's work has changed a lot since his days with the Avengers but it has only gotten better. The way he captures Cap's unique fighting style, especially with the way he utilizes his iconic shield, is the best of any artist I've seen. A few other fill-in artists appear at sporadic intervals throughout the book and they do just fine as well. The behind-the-scenes content is what you might expect for a really good omnibus and there is just a ton of information to read through after the actual issues end.5/5

100% recomendado.

Cap at his best!
Best Captain America run. I haven't read a lot of Captain America, he has 80 years of history and it's so difficult to find complete runs in a collected edition but I managed to cobble together thr Ed Brubaker run and it's my favorite.

This was the first time I’ve ever read any Captain America. I absolutely loved it. Ed Brubaker has made me care about these characters that I never thought I would.
