Something magical and solid
"The Whispers of War" is one of those rare, truly beautiful books. The writing, the characters, the story... they combine to make something magical and solid. I care about these characters like they're real people, and I will miss them now I've finished reading their stories. The story involves something I didn't know too much about (the internment of Germans, Austrians, and Italians during WWII, for no other reason than their nationality), and the parallels with today's asylum seekers makes this hit hard. The writing is warm, welcoming, and, yes, comforting. Outstanding. My thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an advance copy to review. This review is entirely my own, unbiased, opinion.

Very enjoyable reading
The Whispers of War is a beautiful story. I liked the style of writing and the vivid descriptions of life during the war. The three main characters; Hazel, Marie and Nora were all strong and authentic. The story lines were emotive and heart wrenching This book was a very enjoyable and compelling read.

I had not heard of Jill Kelly before this. I feel that this may be among the very best books I read this year, and I read a lot. It is about the struggles of 3 friends to live the lives they choose trough great hardships in London, UK. I won't give the ending away but it talks about family many years later. Five stars! I will look for more of her books.

This is a well written tale of three close friends who support each other through difficult times at the beginning of the Second World war with Germany and a close friendship that develops into a love story even though divided by an ocean.

This is the first book that I have read by this author, but it definitely won’t be the last. The Whispers of War is the story of three women and their friendship. Nora, the wealthy debutante; Hazel, the daughter of a woman with questionable morals, who is stuck in a loveless marriage, and Marie who is German born but has lived with her aunt, uncle and cousin in London ever since her parents shipped her there to school. They first met as roommates in school, developing a friendship which has continued as each navigates life as a young woman. As the United Kingdom is launched into war with Germany the strength of friendship shines through as each of the three is faced with life changing events. Julia Kelly has created a novel so well researched and with such unforgettable characters that the reader in drawn right into the story. A must read.
