These microscope are awesome but small so hold on tightly.
I loved this little versitile microscope. I carried it with me wherever I went. However, tragedy struck while I was attempting to examine a large groin flea I had removed from my body. That disgusting parasitic bastard suddenly sprang, locked on to the scope and in one fell sweep, swallowed it whole. I always thought those darn suckers were suckers! I plan to order another one or maybe three this time just to make certain I always have access to one of those magnificent albeit tiny, devices. There is a picture below that sows an extremely tiny creature, so small, approx 130,000 were captured in the gel on the point of a Sharpie .7 mm gel pen. In the picture, it has been enlarged about 130,000 times - I think - and photographed through the microscope Cheers, Jerry Ison

Damned cheeky little instrument!
Surprising little product. Initially, I was disappointed. The thing is small and feels as though it were cheaply made (and it is mass produced and Chinese). It is metal, plastic, glass, with a battery and LED's. Physically (it is always "folded") the thing takes up maybe half the volume of a pack of cigarettes. When I tried to focus this (by turning, as you would with a normal microscope), I couldn't get it to work. The reason: The focus is not a "turn to focus" function, it is a "push-pull" to focus. Again, that seemed cheesy, but: This is a remarkably inexpensive little gadget, and it turns out the magnification is every bit what it says it is: 60x (approx) and "true optical", no digital tomfoolery. And the thing has features you will not expect: There is a 3-position (center off) switch for the LED's. One direction lights just one blue LED, a weak but "colored" illumination. The other direction lights three relatively powerful and very bright white LED's. Both LED settings have specific uses, the 3 bright ones are for everyday use and work great. The dim blue is an "alternate light source", a feature of higher end products. Look: No one is ever going to use one of these to become a finalist for the Nobel. But this item works perfectly, as described, and the price is unbeatable. It is my favorite gadget of the year, at least "value-wise".

Main scope works
The main scope light works, and with it I was able to see microscopic laser inscriptions of swarovski on all my zirconia. However, it did take quite a bit of fiddling to get it focused just right on the correct spot. My son was never able to see more than blotches, so I can understand how some people may have had problems seeing anything with the scope: even with the scope working correctly. Clearer instructions and written expectations may help in that regard. The separate 10x magnifying lens had some kind of defect in it: looked like a dark film broke off on one edge and was crumpled within the lens itself near the side. However, when I bought this, I treated that as a nice bonus item, not the main reason for me to buy, and therefore not enough reason to return. That lens is quite large, so the defect doesn't interfere much. I do like the main scope quite a bit, but downgraded it to 4 stars for being hard to use.

Good Little Magnifier, Hard to Focus
Upon receiving this item you see it comes in a nice little carry pouch that easily fits into your pocket to take it with you on the go, which is great if you like something small to see jewelry markings at places like yard sales or swap meets. Before you use it make sure you pull the little tab for the batteries so your light will work, you'll need it. Now there are two different lights on this, if you flip the switch one way there are 2 bright led lights that will light up whatever your trying to see quite well. However if you want to see something that you need a black-light for simply flip the switch the other way and viola a little black-light to see secured codes (or you classmates note written in invisible ink). Now for the magnifier itself, this does have a powerful magnification, but it is very difficult to get a focus on something. You pretty much need to put the end of the magnifier right on top of what you want to magnify or else it just looks all blurred and you can't make anything out. For a lot of things this might be ok, but for items like rings this is a total pain in the butt. Most of the times if I have to use this to see the stamp on a ring it takes me a couple minutes to fit the end of the magnifier to exactly where it needs to be in order to read the stamp correctly. Overall though this is a good magnifier for the price and will work in a pinch or if you don't need one that often.

Tiny, bright, equally tiny focal length
I was hoping for small and it turned out to be even smaller than I thought. I consider that a pro. The lights are very bright. It performs as advertised which is both good and bad. In order to focus you must be right up on the object. The little clear plastic spacer rests on the paper. While this could be useful in a lot of ways it would not work for say looking at bugs where you need a little more distance or even trying to look through a clear container. For comparison the simple lens magnifying glass that comes with it was focused when about 3in above the paper I was testing. I did not have any trouble seeing through the scope when it was at the proper distance from an object (which I had read was an issue in another review). I bought this for the kiddo so the super powerful but compact scope along with the traditional magnifying glass which allows for more distance for looking at bugs and what not is really a perfect combo.
