Its good for tablets but I think I’d find another solution for a phone.

No it's too big for a switch. It will not collapse to that small of a size. It is meant for big tablets.

How well does the suction hold?

You need a flat surface. If you have a textured dashboard, just buy one of those adhesive discs as I did and it hasn't moved in a couple years, despite extreme hot and cold.
