Would the bricks stand upright in a small amount of sand, or is the included holder really the best option for keeping bricks up?

Hi, Yes, sand would work just find to stand this incense brick up in. We also offer additional larger burners such as the Casa, Log Cabin, Teepee, White Teepee, Horno, Kiva, and Black Steam Engine. Crazy question - can I use these inside a gas fireplace to simulate wood smells?

Yes -- but don't put the incense "inside" the gas fireplace (or you won't be able to smell it). Just burn the incense nearby on the mantle or on the hearth. Then you can enjoy the aroma.

What are the scents ?

The scents are pine,cedar,juniper,hickory, alder, mesquite, balsam. I do not recommend this product as they do not burn well and they all smell the same.
